## Question

What is diode clamper? Describe the operation of diode clamper circuit.

## Short answer

A diode clamper adds a DC level to an AC signal. In a positive clamper, the capacitor charges to Vm during the first negative half-cycle through the forward-biased diode; then the capacitor acts as a battery, shifting the output to Vin+Vm, clamping the negative peak near 0 V. The RC time constant must be large.

## Answer

A **diode clamper** (dc restorer) is a circuit that adds a dc level to an ac signal, shifting the whole waveform up or down without changing its shape. It consists of a capacitor, a diode and a resistor (and a battery if an extra shift is needed).

#### Positive clamper (shifts the waveform up)
```text
 Vin o---| |---+---o Vout
          C    |
              D (anode to ground, cathode to output)  [R across output]
               |
 GND o---------+---o
```

Take Vin = Vm sin ωt, an ideal diode, and an RC time constant much larger than the signal period.

**Operation**
- **First negative half cycle:** the output tries to go negative, so the diode is forward biased and conducts. The capacitor quickly charges through the diode to Vm (input-side plate negative), and Vout is held near 0 V.
- **After that:** the capacitor stays charged to about Vm and cannot discharge (the diode is off and R is large). It acts as a battery of Vm in series with the input.
- Output: Vout = Vin + Vm. The waveform now swings from 0 V to +2Vm; its negative peak is clamped at 0 V (−0.7 V for a real diode).

```text
 Vin   Vm                Vout  2Vm
  ---/\--/\---           /\  /\
 ---/--\/--\--- 0   ---/  \/  \--- 0
   -Vm
```

#### Negative clamper
If the diode is reversed, the capacitor charges to Vm in the opposite polarity during the positive peak, and Vout = Vin − Vm. The positive peak is clamped at 0 V and the output swings from −2Vm to 0.

#### Biased clamper
A battery V in series with the diode moves the clamping level to ±V. The output is then Vin + (Vm ± V).

**Applications:** restoring the dc level in TV receivers, test equipment, and voltage multiplier circuits.

## Check yourself

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. Which components make a diode clamper?
   A. Inductor, diode and resistor
   B. Capacitor, diode and resistor
   C. Two diodes and a transformer
   D. Resistor and Zener diode only
   Answer: B. A clamper uses capacitor, diode and resistor (plus a battery if needed). (Key point: Clamper components)

2. Why must RC be much larger than the signal period?
   A. So the capacitor charges slowly
   B. So the capacitor keeps its charge and does not discharge between cycles
   C. So the diode stays on
   D. To raise the output frequency
   Answer: B. A large RC keeps the stored voltage nearly constant. (Key point: Time constant)

3. For a positive clamper with ideal diode and input Vm sin ωt, what is Vout?
   A. Vin - Vm
   B. Vin + Vm, swinging 0 to 2Vm
   C. Vin, unchanged
   D. Vin + 2Vm
   Answer: B. The capacitor holds Vm, so Vout = Vin + Vm. (Key point: Positive clamper output)

4. What changes if the diode is reversed?
   A. Vout = Vin - Vm, swinging -2Vm to 0
   B. Vout = Vin + Vm
   C. The circuit becomes a rectifier
   D. Nothing changes
   Answer: A. The capacitor charges with opposite polarity and the positive peak is clamped at 0 V. (Key point: Negative clamper)
