## Question

What are paints? Give an account of any two types of paints indicating their applications in engineering works.

## Short answer

Paint is a pigment dispersion in a drying oil. Oil paint (pigment in linseed oil) is used on wood, walls and metalwork. Enamel paint (pigment in varnish) gives a hard glossy finish for machines, vehicles and bathrooms.

## Answer

**Paint** is a dispersion of pigment in a drying oil with thinner, drier and other additives, used to protect and decorate surfaces.

#### Types of paint and applications
1. **Oil paint:** pigment in linseed oil with thinner and drier. Used on wood, walls, metal doors and windows, and exterior woodwork.
2. **Enamel paint:** pigment dispersed in varnish (resin + oil). Forms a hard, glossy, water-resistant film; used on machines, vehicles, metal furniture, bathrooms and kitchens.
3. **Emulsion (water) paint:** pigment in a water-based emulsion of a polymer (acrylic, PVA). Quick-drying and washable; used on interior walls and ceilings of buildings.
4. **Anticorrosive paint:** contains red lead, zinc chromate or zinc dust; protects steel bridges, tanks, pipes and ships from rusting.
5. **Cement paint:** cement + pigment; used on rough exterior walls.
6. **Bituminous paint:** bitumen in a solvent; used on underground pipes and wet surfaces.

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. What is paint?
   A. A clear solution of resin in volatile solvent with no pigment
   B. A mixture of cement and pigment in water
   C. A dispersion of pigment in a drying oil with thinner, drier and additives, forming a protective, decorative film
   D. A solution of bitumen in a solvent
Answer: C. Paint is a mechanical dispersion of pigment in a drying oil (vehicle) with thinner, drier and additives; it dries to a thin film. (Key point: Definition of paint)

2. How does enamel paint differ from oil paint?
   A. The pigment is dispersed in varnish, giving a hard glossy film
   B. It has no pigment
   C. It is water-based
   D. It uses bitumen as the vehicle
Answer: A. Enamel has pigment in varnish (resin + oil), giving a hard, glossy, water-resistant film. (Key point: Enamel)

3. Where is emulsion (water) paint mainly used?
   A. Underground pipes
   B. Steel ships and bridges
   C. Interior walls and ceilings
   D. Rough exterior cement walls
Answer: C. Emulsion paint is quick-drying and washable, used on interior walls and ceilings. (Key point: Emulsion paint use)

4. Which paint protects steel bridges, tanks and ships from rusting?
   A. Anticorrosive paint with red lead or zinc chromate
   B. Emulsion paint
   C. Cement paint
   D. Distemper
Answer: A. Anticorrosive paints contain red lead, zinc chromate or zinc dust. (Key point: Anticorrosive paint)
