## Question

What are transition elements? List the industrial application of 3d transition elements.

## Short answer

Transition elements have a partly filled d-subshell. Industrial uses: Fe for steel and Haber catalyst; Cr for stainless steel; Ni for hydrogenation and alloys; Cu for wires, brass; Zn for galvanizing and dry cells; Ti for aircraft alloys and TiO₂ pigment; V as V₂O₅ catalyst in contact process; Mn for steel and dry cells.

## Answer

**Transition elements:** d-block elements having a partly filled d subshell in the atom or in a common ion.

#### Industrial applications of 3d elements
- **Iron:** steel and cast iron for construction, machines and vehicles; catalyst in Haber's process for NH₃.
- **Chromium:** stainless steel, chrome plating (corrosion resistance), nichrome wire.
- **Nickel:** hydrogenation catalyst for vegetable oil, electroplating, Ni–Cd batteries, alloys (nichrome, monel).
- **Copper:** electrical wires, brass and bronze, heat exchangers.
- **Zinc:** galvanising iron, brass, dry cells.
- **Titanium:** light, strong alloys in aircraft; TiO₂ as white pigment.
- **Vanadium:** V₂O₅ catalyst in the contact process for H₂SO₄; vanadium steel.
- **Manganese:** manganese steel; MnO₂ in dry cells.
