## Question

Define the terms moisture content, superheated vapor, saturation pressure and saturated liquid.

## Short answer

Moisture content is mass fraction of liquid, 1−x. Superheated vapor exists above saturation temperature. Saturation pressure is pressure where phase change occurs at a given temperature. Saturated liquid is at saturation state with x=0.

## Answer

- **Moisture content:** the mass fraction of liquid in a liquid-vapour mixture, = m_liquid / m_total = 1 − x, where x is the quality (dryness fraction).
- **Superheated vapour:** vapour at a temperature higher than the saturation temperature corresponding to its pressure (or at a pressure lower than the saturation pressure at its temperature). It is a single-phase gas-like state; T and P are independent. Degree of superheat = T − T_sat.
- **Saturation pressure:** the pressure at which a pure substance changes phase (boils or condenses) at a given temperature. For water at 100 °C it is 101.3 kPa.
- **Saturated liquid:** a liquid at the saturation temperature and pressure; any addition of heat will cause some of it to vaporise (x = 0).

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. How is moisture content related to quality x?
   A. Moisture content = 1 - x
   B. Moisture content = x
   C. Moisture content = 1/x
   D. Moisture content = x vg
Answer: A. Moisture content is the liquid mass fraction, mliquid/mtotal = 1 - x. (Key point: Moisture content)

2. Which state is a superheated vapour?
   A. Vapour at a temperature below Tsat for its pressure
   B. Vapour at a temperature above Tsat for its pressure
   C. Liquid at saturation temperature
   D. A liquid-vapour mixture with x = 0.9
Answer: B. Superheated vapour has T above Tsat(P), is single phase, and has independent T and P. (Key point: Superheated vapour)

3. What is saturation pressure?
   A. The pressure at which the substance is a solid
   B. The highest pressure a liquid can reach
   C. The pressure at which a pure substance changes phase at a given temperature
   D. The atmospheric pressure at all temperatures
Answer: C. At a given temperature, phase change occurs at the saturation pressure (water at 100 C: 101.3 kPa). (Key point: Saturation pressure)

4. What distinguishes a saturated liquid?
   A. It has already partly vaporised (x = 0.5)
   B. It is cooler than Tsat for its pressure
   C. It is entirely vapour
   D. It is at Tsat and any heat added causes some vaporisation (x = 0)
Answer: D. A saturated liquid is on the verge of boiling, with x = 0. (Key point: Saturated liquid)
