## Question

Differentiate between asphalt and bitumen.

## Short answer

Asphalt is a mixture of bitumen with mineral matter (sand, aggregate) that provides load-bearing strength for roads and flooring. Bitumen is the pure black hydrocarbon binder obtained from petroleum refining, soluble in CS2 with very low mineral content, and acts only as a binder in construction.

## Answer

**Asphalt** is a mixture of bitumen with mineral matter (sand, filler or aggregate), either natural (rock asphalt, lake asphalt) or artificial. **Bitumen** is the sticky black hydrocarbon binder, obtained from crude oil refining (residue) or natural deposits, and is the main binding component of asphalt.

| Point | Asphalt | Bitumen |
|---|---|---|
| Composition | Bitumen + mineral matter (sand, stone dust, aggregate) | Pure hydrocarbon (carbon and hydrogen) with little mineral matter |
| Source | Natural deposits, or made by mixing bitumen with aggregate | Distillation residue of petroleum, or natural |
| Mineral content | High (can be up to 80–90% in rock asphalt) | Very low |
| Solubility in CS$_2$ | Partly soluble (mineral part remains) | Almost fully soluble |
| State | Solid or semi-solid mixture | Viscous liquid to semi-solid |
| Use | Road surfacing, flooring, waterproofing, roofing | Binder for roads, waterproofing, paints, felt |
| Strength | Gives load-bearing wearing course | Only a binder, no strength alone |
| Temperature use | Mixed hot (hot-mix asphalt) | Heated to make it workable |

In American usage "asphalt" means what is called "bitumen" elsewhere; the above is the IOE textbook difference.

## Check yourself

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. How does asphalt differ in composition from bitumen (IOE textbook)?
   A. Asphalt is bitumen mixed with mineral matter
   B. Asphalt is pure hydrocarbon
   C. Asphalt is distilled from coal
   D. Asphalt has no bitumen
Answer: A. Asphalt = bitumen + mineral matter such as sand, filler or aggregate. (Key point: Composition)

2. Which is true of solubility in CS2?
   A. Asphalt fully soluble, bitumen insoluble
   B. Both insoluble
   C. Bitumen almost fully soluble; asphalt only partly because minerals remain
   D. Both fully soluble
Answer: C. The mineral part of asphalt does not dissolve. (Key point: Solubility)

3. What is the role of bitumen compared with asphalt?
   A. Bitumen is only a binder with no strength alone; asphalt gives a load-bearing wearing course
   B. Bitumen is the strong wearing course
   C. Both are identical
   D. Asphalt is a binder only
Answer: A. Bitumen binds; asphalt (mixture) gives the load-bearing wearing course. (Key point: Role)

4. Rock asphalt can contain how much mineral matter?
   A. Almost none
   B. Up to 80-90%
   C. Exactly 10%
   D. Always 50%
Answer: B. Mineral content is high, up to 80-90% in rock asphalt. (Key point: Mineral content)
