## Question

Explain briefly the operations involved in preparation of clay for the manufacturing process of brick.

## Short answer

Clay preparation involves removing topsoil, digging, removing impurities, weathering for months, blending with necessary materials, and tempering with water to a uniform plastic mass ready for moulding.

## Answer

The clay is prepared in these operations.

1. **Unsoiling:** the top 200 mm of soil containing impurities and organic matter is removed.
2. **Digging:** clay is dug up and heaped in lumps of about 300 to 400 mm.
3. **Cleaning:** stones, roots, pebbles and lime lumps are removed by hand.
4. **Weathering:** the clay is exposed to rain, sun and frost for a few weeks (up to a season); this makes it more uniform and breaks lumps.
5. **Blending:** different earths are mixed and sand or ash is added if needed to improve composition.
6. **Tempering:** water is added and the clay is kneaded by feet, spades or pug mill until a uniform plastic mass is obtained, ready for moulding.

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. Unsoiling is:
   A. Mixing water
   B. Burning
   C. Moulding
   D. Removing the top 200 mm of soil with impurities
Answer: D. The top layer has organic matter. (Key point: Unsoiling)

2. Weathering clay does what?
   A. Makes it more uniform and breaks lumps
   B. Burns it
   C. Hardens it
   D. Adds colour
Answer: A. Exposure to rain, sun and frost for weeks. (Key point: Weathering)

3. Tempering is:
   A. Drying clay
   B. Adding water and kneading to a uniform plastic mass
   C. Burning clay
   D. Digging clay
Answer: B. Done by feet, spades or pug mill. (Key point: Tempering)
