## Question

Why is the drying of brick an extremely important step in manufacturing brick?

## Short answer

Drying removes moisture from green bricks, preventing steam-induced cracks and warping during burning. It also strengthens the bricks for handling and stacking, and reduces fuel consumption.

## Answer

Drying removes most of the moisture from moulded (green) bricks before burning. If wet bricks are burnt directly, the water turns to steam, causing cracks, warping and breakage. Drying also gives the green bricks enough strength to be handled and stacked in the kiln, and saves fuel during burning, so proper drying is essential for a good and economical product.

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. Why dry bricks before burning?
   A. To lighten colour
   B. To raise absorption
   C. Water turns to steam and cracks the brick
   D. To save fuel only
Answer: C. Steam causes cracks and warping. (Key point: Reason)

2. Burning wet bricks causes:
   A. Greater strength
   B. Better colour
   C. Lower cost
   D. Cracks, warping and breakage
Answer: D. Proper drying avoids these defects. (Key point: Effect)

3. Drying removes:
   A. Most of the moisture from green bricks
   B. All the clay
   C. Silica
   D. Lime
Answer: A. This prepares them for burning. (Key point: Dryness)
