## Question

What is the difference between ferrous and non-ferrous materials?

## Short answer

Ferrous metals contain iron as main element, are magnetic, and rust easily (e.g., steel). Non-ferrous metals contain little or no iron, are non-magnetic, and resist corrosion (e.g., aluminium, copper).

## Answer

| Point | Ferrous metals | Non-ferrous metals |
|---|---|---|
| Iron content | Contain iron as the main element | Contain little or no iron |
| Examples | Cast iron, wrought iron, steel | Aluminium, copper, zinc, lead, brass |
| Magnetic | Magnetic | Non-magnetic |
| Corrosion | Rust easily | Resist corrosion |
| Strength | High | Generally lower |
| Weight | Heavy | Lighter (aluminium) |
| Conductivity | Lower | Higher (copper, aluminium) |
| Cost | Cheaper | Costlier |
| Melting point | High | Usually lower |

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. The defining difference between ferrous and non-ferrous metals is:
   A. Colour
   B. Iron as the main element in ferrous; little or no iron in non-ferrous
   C. Hardness only
   D. Melting point only
Answer: B. Ferrous metals have iron as main constituent. (Key point: Iron content)

2. Which is correct?
   A. Ferrous: non-magnetic, resist corrosion
   B. Ferrous: magnetic, rust easily; non-ferrous: non-magnetic, resist corrosion
   C. Both rust equally
   D. Non-ferrous are magnetic
Answer: B. Steel and iron are magnetic and rust; aluminium, copper etc. are non-magnetic and resist corrosion. (Key point: Corrosion and magnetism)

3. Compared with ferrous metals, non-ferrous metals are generally:
   A. Stronger and cheaper
   B. Weaker, costlier, better conductors and usually lower melting
   C. Heavier and cheaper
   D. Higher melting and poorer conductors
Answer: B. Non-ferrous metals are lighter, costlier, conduct better and usually melt at lower temperatures. (Key point: Strength, cost, conductivity)
