## Question

Define TTL IC Signal levels for Input and Output logic with example.

## Short answer

Standard TTL with Vcc=5V defines output HIGH ≥ 2.4V, output LOW ≤ 0.4V; input HIGH ≥ 2.0V, input LOW ≤ 0.8V. Indeterminate region 0.8–2.0V must be avoided, providing 0.4V noise margins.

## Answer

**TTL signal levels** are the guaranteed voltage ranges that a standard TTL (74xx) gate, with $V_{CC} = 5\ \text{V}$, accepts at its input and produces at its output as logic 0 and logic 1.

| Parameter | Meaning | Value |
|---|---|---|
| $V_{OH(min)}$ | lowest output HIGH | 2.4 V |
| $V_{OL(max)}$ | highest output LOW | 0.4 V |
| $V_{IH(min)}$ | lowest input accepted as HIGH | 2.0 V |
| $V_{IL(max)}$ | highest input accepted as LOW | 0.8 V |

```text
 Output side           Input side
 5.0 +-----+           5.0 +-----+
     | HIGH|               | HIGH|
 2.4 +-----+  ------>  2.0 +-----+
     | bad |               |indet|
 0.4 +-----+  ------>  0.8 +-----+
     | LOW |               | LOW |
 0   +-----+           0   +-----+
```

Input voltages between 0.8 V and 2.0 V are **indeterminate** and must be avoided. The difference between output and input limits gives the **noise margin**:

$$
\begin{aligned} NM_H &= V_{OH(min)} - V_{IH(min)} = 2.4 - 2.0 = 0.4\ \text{V} \\ NM_L &= V_{IL(max)} - V_{OL(max)} = 0.8 - 0.4 = 0.4\ \text{V} \end{aligned}
$$

**Example:** a 7400 output at logic 0 is at most 0.4 V. Even if 0.3 V of noise is added on the wire, the next gate sees 0.7 V, which is still below 0.8 V and is read as logic 0.

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. A standard TTL gate guarantees which output levels?
   A. VOH(min) = 2.4 V and VOL(max) = 0.4 V
   B. VOH(min) = 2.0 V and VOL(max) = 0.8 V
   C. VOH(min) = 3.5 V and VOL(max) = 1.5 V
   D. VOH(min) = 4.9 V and VOL(max) = 0.1 V
   Answer: A. TTL outputs are guaranteed at least 2.4 V for HIGH and at most 0.4 V for LOW; 2.0/0.8 V are the input limits. (Key point: TTL output levels)

2. An input voltage of 1.4 V applied to a TTL gate input is:
   A. Read as logic 0
   B. Read as logic 1
   C. Indeterminate, because it lies between 0.8 V and 2.0 V
   D. Read as logic 1 only if VCC is 5 V
   Answer: C. Inputs between VIL(max)=0.8 V and VIH(min)=2.0 V are not guaranteed to be read as either level and must be avoided. (Key point: TTL input levels and indeterminate region)

3. What are the TTL noise margins NM_H and NM_L?
   A. 0.4 V and 0.8 V
   B. 0.4 V each
   C. 1.4 V each
   D. 0.8 V and 2.0 V
   Answer: B. NM_H = 2.4 - 2.0 = 0.4 V and NM_L = 0.8 - 0.4 = 0.4 V. (Key point: Noise margin)

4. A 7400 output at logic 0 (0.4 V max) gets 0.3 V of noise added. What does the next gate do?
   A. Reads it as logic 1
   B. Treats it as indeterminate
   C. Is damaged since 0.7 V exceeds the output limit
   D. Reads 0.7 V as logic 0, since it is below 0.8 V
   Answer: D. 0.4 + 0.3 = 0.7 V, still below VIL(max) = 0.8 V, so it is read as logic 0. (Key point: Noise example)
