## Question

Describe the altitude and lithology of the Churiya range, Fore Himalaya and Trans Himalaya.

## Short answer

The Churiya (Siwalik) range has altitude 300-1500 m and consists of poorly consolidated sandstone, mudstone, and conglomerate. The Fore Himalaya (Mahabharat, Midland) spans 1000-3000 m with phyllite, slate, schist, quartzite, limestone, and granite. The Trans Himalaya (Tethys) lies at 2500-5000 m with fossiliferous Palaeozoic-Cretaceous limestone, shale, sandstone.

## Answer

#### Churiya (Siwalik) range
- **Altitude:** about 300-1500 m (up to 2000 m).
- **Lithology:** sandstone, mudstone, siltstone and conglomerate (Lower, Middle and Upper Siwalik); soft, poorly consolidated.

#### Fore Himalaya (Midland / Mahabharat region)
- **Altitude:** roughly 1000-3000 m (about 2000-3000 m in the Mahabharat range).
- **Lithology:** phyllite, slate, schist, quartzite, limestone, dolomite, gneiss and granite (Lesser Himalayan rocks).

#### Trans Himalaya (Tibetan-Tethys, Inner Himalaya)
- **Altitude:** about 2500-5000 m (rain-shadow plateau).
- **Lithology:** Palaeozoic to Cretaceous fossiliferous sedimentary rocks: limestone, shale, sandstone, slate and quartzite.

The altitude limits are approximate textbook values, and vary between authors.

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. What is the lithology of the Churiya (Siwalik) range?
   A. Gneiss and granite
   B. Soft, poorly consolidated sandstone, mudstone, siltstone and conglomerate
   C. Fossiliferous limestone and shale
   D. Phyllite and slate only
Answer: B. The Churiya range is made of Siwalik sandstone, mudstone, siltstone and conglomerate, soft and poorly consolidated. (Key point: Churiya lithology)

2. Which rocks are typical of the Fore Himalaya (Mahabharat region)?
   A. Quaternary gravel
   B. Phyllite, slate, schist, quartzite, limestone and dolomite
   C. Fossiliferous Cretaceous shale only
   D. Molasse conglomerate
Answer: B. Fore Himalaya has Lesser Himalayan rocks like phyllite, slate, schist, quartzite, limestone, dolomite, gneiss and granite. (Key point: Fore Himalaya rocks)

3. What characterises the Trans (Tethys) Himalaya?
   A. Rain-shadow plateau with Palaeozoic to Cretaceous fossiliferous sedimentary rocks
   B. Wet monsoon belt of alluvium
   C. High-grade gneiss with no fossils
   D. Siwalik molasse
Answer: A. The Trans Himalaya is a rain-shadow region of fossiliferous Palaeozoic to Cretaceous sedimentary rocks. (Key point: Trans Himalaya)
