## Question

Outline the engineering significance of joints.

## Short answer

Joints reduce rock mass strength and bearing capacity, control slope stability, and provide seepage paths causing leakage and tunnel inflow. They accelerate weathering, cause overbreak and roof falls in tunnels, but aid quarrying; treatment includes grouting, rock bolts, and shotcrete.

## Answer

A **joint** is a fracture or crack in a rock along which there has been no (or negligible) displacement of the two sides.

- Joints reduce the strength and bearing capacity of the rock mass; blocks bounded by joints can slide or fall.
- They control slope stability (plane, wedge and toppling failures) in cuts and dam abutments.
- They give paths for seepage, so reservoirs leak and tunnels get water inflow.
- Weathering is faster along joints.
- In tunnels they cause overbreak and roof falls; the tunnel axis should be at a high angle to the main joint set.
- They help in quarrying blocks, but closely spaced joints give only small blocks.
- Grouting, rock bolts and shotcrete are used for treatment.

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. What is a joint?
   A. A fracture with no or negligible displacement
   B. A fracture with large displacement
   C. A bend of beds
   D. An erosion surface
Answer: A. A joint has no appreciable movement. (Key point: Definition of joint)

2. How do joints affect reservoirs and tunnels?
   A. They make the rock watertight
   B. They give paths for seepage, causing leakage and water inflow
   C. They only help drainage in no way
   D. They reduce weathering
Answer: B. Joints are water paths. (Key point: Seepage)

3. How should the tunnel axis be oriented to the main joint set?
   A. Parallel
   B. Along the joint planes
   C. At a high angle
   D. It does not matter
Answer: C. A high angle to the main set gives better stability. (Key point: Tunnel axis)
