## Question

Differentiate between straight and meandering river channel systems.

## Short answer

A straight channel is nearly straight with sinuosity below 1.05, steep, stable, found in rock valleys. A meandering channel is sinuous (sinuosity >1.5), gentle, shifts laterally with outer bank erosion and inner bank deposition, forming point bars and ox-bows.

## Answer

| Point | Straight channel | Meandering channel |
|---|---|---|
| Plan shape | Nearly straight | Sinuous, S-shaped loops |
| Sinuosity | Less than 1.05 | Greater than 1.5 |
| Slope | Steep | Gentle |
| Location | Hill region, rock valleys | Plains, floodplains |
| Erosion and deposition | Little lateral movement | Outer bank erosion, inner bank deposition (point bar) |
| Stability | Stable | Shifts and migrates, forms ox-bow lakes |
| Features | Rapids, gorges | Meanders, point bars, ox-bows |

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. Sinuosity of straight and meandering channels is respectively:
   A. > 1.5 and < 1.05
   B. Both < 1.05
   C. Both > 1.5
   D. < 1.05 and > 1.5
Answer: D. Meanders are sinuous. (Key point: Sinuosity)

2. Straight channels occur on what slope and place?
   A. Steep, hill and rock valleys
   B. Gentle, floodplains
   C. Gentle, deltas
   D. Steep, deserts
Answer: A. Meandering ones are on plains. (Key point: Slope)

3. Which channel shifts and forms ox-bow lakes?
   A. Straight
   B. Meandering
   C. Both
   D. Neither
Answer: B. Straight channels are stable. (Key point: Stability)
