## Question

Differentiate between syncline and anticline fold.

## Short answer

An anticline is an upfold with limbs dipping away from the axis and older rocks in the core; a syncline is a downfold with limbs dipping towards the axis and younger rocks in the core. Anticlines have tensional crests, synclines collect water and have higher rock pressure.

## Answer

| Point | Anticline | Syncline |
|---|---|---|
| Shape | Upward arch (convex up) | Downward trough (concave up) |
| Limbs dip | Away from the axis | Towards the axis |
| Age of beds in the core | Oldest beds in the centre | Youngest beds in the centre |
| Outcrop pattern | Older beds at the centre, younger outward | Younger beds at the centre, older outward |
| Stress in the crest/trough | Tension at the top (crest), joints open | Compression at the top; tension at the base |
| Engineering | Roof loosening in tunnels; leakage in reservoirs; trap for oil/gas | Collects water (artesian basin); holds reservoir water; high rock pressure |

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. How do the limbs dip in an anticline?
   A. Towards the axis
   B. Parallel to the axis
   C. Away from the axis
   D. They are horizontal
Answer: C. Anticline limbs dip away from the axis; syncline limbs dip towards it. (Key point: Limb dip)

2. Which beds are in the centre of a syncline?
   A. Oldest beds
   B. Beds of random age
   C. Igneous rocks only
   D. Youngest beds
Answer: D. Syncline has youngest beds at its core; anticline has oldest. (Key point: Core age)

3. What is the shape of a syncline?
   A. A downward trough
   B. An upward arch
   C. A flat plane
   D. A fracture
Answer: A. A syncline is a trough; an anticline is an arch. (Key point: Shape)

4. Which engineering effect belongs to a syncline?
   A. Loosening of the tunnel roof in tension and trap for oil
   B. Collects water as an artesian basin and gives high rock pressure in tunnels
   C. Reservoir leakage along dipping limbs
   D. No effect on groundwater
Answer: B. Synclines collect water; the roof loosening and oil trap are anticline features. (Key point: Engineering effect)
