## Question

Solve the differential equation (D² − 3D + 2)y = e^(3t) under the conditions y(0) = 0, y'(0) = 1, using the Laplace transform.

## Short answer

y(t) = (e^(3t) - e^t)/2.

## Answer

The equation (D² − 3D + 2)y = e^(3t) means y'' − 3y' + 2y = e^(3t), with y(0) = 0, y'(0) = 1. Let Y = L{y}.

```text
(s²Y − 0 − 1) − 3(sY − 0) + 2Y = 1/(s − 3)
(s² − 3s + 2) Y = 1 + 1/(s − 3) = (s − 2)/(s − 3)
(s − 1)(s − 2) Y = (s − 2)/(s − 3)
Y = 1/[(s − 1)(s − 3)]
  = (1/2) [1/(s − 3) − 1/(s − 1)]
```

Inverse transform:

**Answer: y(t) = (e^(3t) − eᵗ)/2.** Check: y(0) = 0 ✓; y'(0) = (3 − 1)/2 = 1 ✓.

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. y(0) = 0, y'(0) = 1. What is (s^2 - 3s + 2)Y?
   A. 1/(s-3)
   B. s + 1/(s-3)
   C. 1 + 1/(s-3) = (s-2)/(s-3)
   D. 1 - 1/(s-3)
   Answer: C. The initial condition y'(0) = 1 moves over as +1, and L{e^(3t)} = 1/(s-3). (Key point: Transformed equation)

2. (s-1)(s-2)Y = (s-2)/(s-3). What does Y become?
   A. (s-2)/((s-1)(s-3))
   B. 1/((s-1)(s-2)(s-3))
   C. 1/((s-2)(s-3))
   D. 1/((s-1)(s-3))
   Answer: D. The factor (s-2) cancels from both sides. (Key point: Simplifying Y)

3. What is y(t)?
   A. (e^(3t) - e^t)/2
   B. (e^t - e^(3t))/2
   C. e^(3t) - e^t
   D. (e^(3t) + e^t)/2
   Answer: A. 1/((s-1)(s-3)) = (1/2)[1/(s-3) - 1/(s-1)]. (Key point: Final solution)
