## Question

What is namespace? Explain how a namespace can be used and its significance.

## Short answer

A namespace is a named region grouping identifiers to avoid name collisions. Use scope resolution ns::id, using declaration using ns::x, or using directive using namespace ns. It organizes large programs and safely combines code from multiple libraries.

## Answer

#### Namespace

A namespace is a named region that holds a group of identifiers (variables, functions, classes) so that their names do not conflict with the same names declared elsewhere. The standard library places all its names in the namespace `std`.

#### How to use it

**Defining**

```cpp
#include <iostream>
using namespace std;
namespace first {
    int value = 10;
    void show() { cout << "First: " << value << endl; }
}
namespace second {
    int value = 20;
    void show() { cout << "Second: " << value << endl; }
}
```

**Accessing members** in three ways:

1. Scope resolution operator: `first::show();`
2. `using` declaration for one name: `using first::value;`
3. `using` directive for the whole namespace: `using namespace second;`

```cpp
int main() {
    first::show();                   // First: 10
    cout << second::value << endl;   // 20
    using first::value;              // using declaration
    cout << value << endl;           // 10 (first::value)
    using namespace second;          // using directive
    show();                          // Second: 20
    return 0;
}
```

Namespaces can be nested and can also be extended by declaring the same namespace again in another place. An unnamed namespace limits names to the current file.

#### Significance

- Avoids name collisions when the same name is used in different libraries or by different programmers.
- Organises a large program into logical groups.
- Allows code from several sources to be combined safely.
- Keeps global scope clean.

## Check yourself

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. What is a namespace for?
   A. Allocating memory
   B. Grouping identifiers to avoid name conflicts
   C. Speeding loops
   D. Defining classes only
   Answer: B. It avoids collisions. (Key point: Purpose)

2. Which is NOT a way to access namespace members?
   A. first::show()
   B. using first::value;
   C. The dot operator first.show()
   D. using namespace second;
   Answer: C. The three ways are scope resolution, using declaration and using directive. (Key point: Access ways)

3. Where are standard library names placed?
   A. In global scope
   B. In namespace main
   C. In namespace cpp
   D. In namespace std
   Answer: D. Standard names live in std. (Key point: std)

4. What does using namespace second; do?
   A. Makes all names of second available without qualification
   B. Imports only one name
   C. Deletes second
   D. Creates second
   Answer: A. A using directive brings the whole namespace. (Key point: Using directive)
