## Question

Write down the limitations of procedural programming.

## Short answer

Procedural programming has no data security because global data is open to all functions, models real-world poorly, is hard to maintain when data structures change, offers limited reusability, is not easily extensible, and becomes complex in large projects.

## Answer

Procedural programming (C, Pascal, FORTRAN) divides a program into functions that work on shared data. Its limitations are:

1. **No data security** - Global data is open to every function. A fault in one function can corrupt data used by others.
2. **Poor modelling of the real world** - Data and functions are kept separate, so real objects like "student" or "car" cannot be represented naturally.
3. **Difficult maintenance** - Changing a data structure forces changes in all functions that use it, and large programs become hard to debug.
4. **Little reusability** - Code can be reused only by copying or by calling functions; there is no inheritance.
5. **Not easily extensible** - Adding new features often means editing existing code, which may introduce new errors.
6. **Top-down only** - Large programs become complex as the number of functions grows.

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. Why is data insecure in procedural programming?
   A. Global data is open to every function, so one faulty function can corrupt it
   B. Data is always private
   C. Data is stored inside objects
   D. Functions cannot access data
Answer: A. Shared global data can be changed by any function. (Key point: Data security)

2. Why does procedural programming model real objects poorly?
   A. It has too many classes
   B. Data and functions are kept separate
   C. It forbids functions
   D. It uses inheritance too much
Answer: B. Entities like student or car combine data and behaviour, which procedural code separates. (Key point: Real-world modelling)

3. What happens when a data structure changes in a procedural program?
   A. Nothing else needs change
   B. Only main() changes
   C. All functions using it must be changed
   D. The compiler updates functions
Answer: C. Tight coupling to shared data makes maintenance difficult. (Key point: Maintenance)
