## Question

Differentiate between a Finite State Machine and a Finite State Automaton.

## Short answer

A finite state automaton (FSA) only accepts or rejects strings and has final states, recognizing a language. A finite state machine (FSM) produces an output string via an output function and lacks final states, used for computing functions like sequential circuits.

## Answer

| Point | Finite State Machine (FSM) | Finite State Automaton (FSA) |
|---|---|---|
| Output | Produces an output string (Mealy or Moore machine) | Produces no output, only accepts or rejects |
| Definition | (S, I, O, f, g, s₀): states, input alphabet, output alphabet, next-state function, output function, start state | (Q, Σ, δ, q₀, F): states, alphabet, transition function, start state, final states |
| Final states | None needed | Has a set of final (accepting) states |
| Purpose | Computes a function, e.g. a vending machine or sequential circuit | Recognises a language |
| Example | Binary adder or parity generator | DFA accepting strings with even a's |

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. Which has output?
   A. FSA produces output
   B. Both produce output
   C. Neither
   D. FSM produces output; FSA only accepts or rejects
Answer: D. FSM is Mealy/Moore with outputs. (Key point: Output)

2. Which has a set of final states?
   A. FSM
   B. Both
   C. Neither
   D. FSA
   Answer: D. FSA = (Q, Σ, δ, q₀, F). (Key point: Final states)

3. The purpose of an FSA is?
   A. Compute an output function
   B. Store data
   C. Sort input
   D. Recognise a language
Answer: D. FSAs decide language membership. (Key point: Purpose)
