## Question

Differentiate between aquifer and confining bed.

## Short answer

An aquifer stores and transmits water with high permeability and yields water to wells, e.g., gravel, sand. A confining bed has very low permeability, restricts flow, yields little water, and acts as a barrier, e.g., clay, shalle. Aquifers are reservoirs; confining beds create confined conditions and seal reservoirs.

## Answer

| Point | Aquifer | Confining bed |
|---|---|---|
| Definition | Saturated formation that stores and transmits water | Low-permeability layer that restricts water movement |
| Permeability | High | Very low |
| Yield | Gives useful water to wells | Gives little or none |
| Examples | Gravel, sand, fractured rock, cavernous limestone | Clay, shale, unfractured igneous rock |
| Function | Reservoir and conduit | Barrier, makes confined conditions |
| Types | Unconfined, confined, leaky | Aquiclude, aquitard, aquifuge |
| Engineering use | Water supply source; seepage path | Natural seal of reservoir and dam foundation |

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. How does permeability differ between aquifer and confining bed?
   A. Aquifer high, confining bed very low
   B. Aquifer low, confining bed high
   C. Both high
   D. Both equal
Answer: A. Aquifers transmit water readily; confining beds restrict it. (Key point: Permeability)

2. What is the function of a confining bed?
   A. Barrier making confined conditions
   B. Source of wells
   C. Recharge only
   D. Reservoir of free water
Answer: A. Confining beds act as barriers and create confined conditions. (Key point: Function)

3. Why are confining beds useful in dam foundations and reservoirs?
   A. They are a natural seal
   B. They leak freely
   C. They dissolve
   D. They produce springs
Answer: A. Low permeability gives a natural seal for reservoirs and dam foundations. (Key point: Engineering use)
