## Question

Differentiate between confined and unconfined aquifers with a suitable diagram.

## Short answer

Unconfined aquifer: no impermeable top, water table at atmospheric pressure, direct recharge, large fluctuation. Confined aquifer: bounded by aquicludes, water under pressure, recharge only at outcrop, small fluctuation, may produce artesian flow.

## Answer

| Point | Unconfined (water-table) aquifer | Confined (artesian) aquifer |
|---|---|---|
| Boundary | No impermeable layer above; open to the atmosphere through the overlying pores | Between two impermeable layers (aquicludes) |
| Upper surface | Water table, free surface | Overlying confining bed |
| Pressure | Atmospheric at water table | Water under pressure greater than atmospheric |
| Water level in well | Same as water table | Rises above top of aquifer (piezometric surface) |
| Recharge | Direct from rain over the whole area | Only at outcrop (recharge area) |
| Fluctuation | Large with rainfall | Small |
| Pollution risk | High | Low |
| Storage | Specific yield (by draining pores) | Storage coefficient (compression of the aquifer and expansion of water) |
| Well | Water table well | May be a flowing artesian well |

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. Which describes a confined aquifer?
   A. Open to the atmosphere with a free water table
   B. Between two impermeable layers with water under pressure
   C. Above a perched lens only
   D. Without any recharge
Answer: B. A confined aquifer lies between aquicludes and water is above atmospheric pressure. (Key point: Boundary)

2. Where does water rise in a well in a confined aquifer?
   A. Exactly at the water table
   B. Above the top of the aquifer to the piezometric surface
   C. Below the aquifer
   D. Never rises
Answer: B. Pressure raises water above the aquifer top to the piezometric level. (Key point: Water level in well)

3. Compared with unconfined aquifers, confined aquifers have what?
   A. Recharge only at the outcrop and low pollution risk
   B. Direct rainfall recharge everywhere and high pollution risk
   C. No storage
   D. Large fluctuation
Answer: A. Confining beds limit recharge to the outcrop and protect the aquifer. (Key point: Recharge and pollution)
