## Question

Describe the mitigation measures of geological problems in the Himalaya.

## Short answer

Mitigation includes geological investigation and hazard zoning, slope stabilization (retaining walls, rock bolts), drainage control, bio-engineering, river training and GLOF monitoring, earthquake-resistant design, tunnel support, early warning, land-use planning, and afforestation.

## Answer

Geological problems of the Himalaya arise from its young tectonics, weak and fractured rocks, steep slopes and monsoon rains. Mitigation measures are:

1. **Detailed geological investigation** before construction: mapping, geophysical surveys, boreholes and hazard zoning, avoiding active faults, unstable slopes and landslide-prone ground.
2. **Slope stabilisation:** reduce slope angle, benching, remove loose material, retaining and breast walls, gabions, rock bolts, anchors, wire mesh and shotcrete.
3. **Drainage control:** surface drains, catch drains, sub-surface drains and horizontal drains to lower pore pressure.
4. **Bio-engineering:** vegetation, grass and tree plantation to bind soil and reduce erosion.
5. **River and flood control:** embankments, spurs, check dams, river training, and monitoring of glacial lakes (lowering lake level, early warning systems).
6. **Earthquake resistant design** following the Nepal Building Code and keeping structures away from active faults.
7. **Tunnel support:** systematic classification and flexible support in squeezing and weak zones.
8. **Monitoring and early warning**, land-use planning and community awareness.
9. **Afforestation** and control of unplanned road cutting.

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. What should be done before construction in the Himalaya?
   A. Start excavation immediately
   B. Detailed geological investigation and hazard zoning, avoiding active faults and unstable ground
   C. Cut slopes steeply
   D. Remove drainage
Answer: B. Mapping, geophysics, boreholes and hazard zoning help avoid hazards. (Key point: Investigation first)

2. Why is drainage control used for slope stability?
   A. To lower pore pressure
   B. To raise water pressure
   C. To soften soil
   D. To increase run-off on slope
Answer: A. Surface, catch, sub-surface and horizontal drains lower pore water pressure. (Key point: Drainage)

3. What does bio-engineering achieve?
   A. Vegetation binds soil and reduces erosion
   B. It dissolves rock
   C. It increases slope angle
   D. It causes landslides
Answer: A. Grass and tree plantation bind soil and reduce erosion. (Key point: Bio-engineering)
