## Question

What are the major engineering geological problems of the Siwalik zone?

## Short answer

The Siwalik zone suffers from landslides, gully erosion, debris flows, weak swelling mudstone, active tectonics, and poor construction materials. Mitigation includes gentle slopes, drainage, afforestation, check dams, and river training.

## Answer

The **Siwalik (Churia) zone** lies between the MFT and the MBT. It is made of young, poorly consolidated Neogene-Quaternary molasse deposits: sandstone, siltstone, mudstone, clay and conglomerate.

#### Engineering geological problems
1. **Landslides and slope failure:** soft, weakly cemented rocks with heavy rain, steep slopes and tectonic dip.
2. **Gully erosion and badland topography:** easy erosion of friable sandstone and mudstone.
3. **Debris flow and flash floods:** steep torrents carry large sediment loads to the Terai.
4. **Weak and swelling mudstone:** low strength, slakes on wetting; difficult for tunnel and foundation.
5. **Active tectonics:** the MFT and MBT are active, giving earthquakes and fault scarps.
6. **Seepage and groundwater:** coarse sandstone and conglomerate are highly permeable, so water drains quickly and springs dry up in the dry season.
7. **Poor construction material:** the rocks are too weak for aggregate, and boulders from the conglomerate are often soft or weathered.
8. **Roads:** frequent cut-slope failures and road washouts.

#### Mitigation
Gentle slopes, retaining walls, drainage, afforestation in the Churia range, check dams, river training and proper alignment away from active faults.

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. The Siwalik zone lies between which thrusts?
   A. MFT and MBT
   B. MBT and MCT
   C. MCT and STDS
   D. STDS and Tibet
Answer: A. Siwalik lies between the Main Frontal Thrust and the Main Boundary Thrust. (Key point: Zone limits)

2. Why is gully erosion and badland topography common in the Siwalik?
   A. Rocks are very hard granite
   B. Rocks are young, weakly cemented and friable
   C. There is no rainfall
   D. Slopes are flat
Answer: B. Friable sandstone and mudstone erode easily. (Key point: Rock nature)

3. What is the problem with Siwalik mudstone?
   A. It dissolves in acid
   B. It is too hard to drill
   C. It is low strength and slakes on wetting
   D. It is magnetic
Answer: C. Mudstone is weak, swells and slakes with water, difficult for tunnels and foundations. (Key point: Mudstone)

4. Why is Siwalik rock poor construction material?
   A. It is too strong
   B. It is weak and boulders are soft
   C. It is too heavy
   D. It is radioactive
Answer: B. Weak rocks and soft boulders make poor aggregate. (Key point: Aggregate)
