## Question

What do you mean by real and pseudo-parallelism?

## Short answer

Real parallelism occurs when multiple processing units execute tasks truly simultaneously, providing true speedup. Pseudo-parallelism is rapid time-sharing on a single CPU, making tasks appear concurrent but only one executes at any instant. Real parallelism requires multiple processors; pseudo-parallelism uses context switching.

## Answer

#### Real parallelism

Several tasks really execute at the **same instant**, because the system has more than one processing unit (multiprocessor, multicore CPU, cluster). Each process or thread has its own CPU. Total work finishes in less time, so it gives true speed-up.

#### Pseudo-parallelism

Only one CPU is present, and the OS switches rapidly between processes (time-sharing, context switch every few milliseconds). Because of the fast switching, it appears to the user that all processes run at the same time, but at any instant only one executes. It is also called concurrency or logical parallelism.

| Basis | Real parallelism | Pseudo-parallelism |
|---|---|---|
| Execution | Truly simultaneous | Interleaved, one at a time |
| CPUs needed | Two or more | One |
| Speed-up | Real | Only better CPU utilisation |
| Overhead | Communication/synchronisation | Context switching |
| Example | Quad-core PC | Multitasking on single-core CPU |

## Check yourself

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. What makes parallelism real?
   A. The OS switches quickly between processes on one CPU
   B. More than one processing unit executes tasks at the same instant
   C. Tasks are interleaved with context switches
   D. Only one process is ever loaded
Answer: B. Real parallelism needs two or more CPUs/cores so tasks truly run simultaneously. (Key point: Real parallelism)

2. How does a single-CPU system appear to run all processes at once?
   A. Several CPUs share one clock
   B. Rapid time-sharing with context switches every few milliseconds
   C. Each process runs on its own core
   D. Instructions are executed twice as fast
Answer: B. Fast switching gives the illusion of simultaneity, but only one process executes at any instant. (Key point: Pseudo-parallelism mechanism)

3. The main overhead of pseudo-parallelism is:
   A. Communication and synchronisation between CPUs
   B. Context switching
   C. Cache of multiple cores
   D. Cluster networking
Answer: B. Pseudo-parallelism pays context-switching overhead, whereas real parallelism pays communication/synchronisation overhead. (Key point: Overhead difference)
