## Question

Describe placement water content.

## Short answer

Placement water content is the moisture at which soil is compacted in the field, usually specified as OMC ±2%. Compacting dry of optimum yields higher strength but higher permeability and swelling risk; wet of optimum gives lower permeability and better flexibility for earth dam cores.

## Answer

**Placement water content** is the water content at which the soil is placed and compacted in the field. It is usually specified relative to the **OMC** (for example OMC $\pm 2\%$). Dry-of-optimum placement gives higher strength and stiffness but higher permeability and swelling potential; wet-of-optimum placement gives lower permeability, lower strength and better flexibility, as needed in the core of an earth dam.

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. Placement water content is:
   A. OMC of the modified test
   B. Water content at liquid limit
   C. Water content at which soil is placed and compacted in field
   D. Water content of dry soil
Answer: C. It is the field compaction water content, usually specified relative to OMC. (Key point: Definition)

2. Dry-of-optimum placement gives:
   A. Highest flexibility
   B. Lower strength and permeability
   C. Lowest swelling
   D. Higher strength and stiffness but higher permeability and swelling
Answer: D. Dry side soils are stiffer and stronger but more permeable and swell-prone. (Key point: Dry-of-optimum)

3. Earth dam cores are placed wet of optimum because:
   A. Compaction is easier with no water
   B. Strength is highest
   C. Permeability is lower and the soil is flexible
   D. Swelling is highest
Answer: C. Wet side gives low permeability and flexibility. (Key point: Earth dam core)
