## Question

Describe the types of soil structures based on the compaction process. Also, define double diffuse layer in regard to clay minerals.

## Short answer

Compaction on dry side yields flocculated structure (random edge-to-face), while wet side yields dispersed (face-to-face). The double diffuse layer is the negative clay surface with an adjacent diffuse cloud of cations in pore water.

## Answer

#### Soil structures based on compaction
- **Flocculated structure (dry side of OMC):** particles remain in random edge-to-face contact because there is not enough water to separate them; high strength, high permeability, high swelling potential.
- **Dispersed structure (wet side of OMC):** more water increases repulsion, so particles rotate and align face to face; lower strength, low permeability, more shrinkage and less swelling.
- Compaction with higher energy at the same water content increases the orientation (dispersion).

#### Double diffuse layer (DDL)
Clay particles carry a **negative charge** on their surfaces. In water they attract positive ions (cations) and polar water molecules. Close to the particle the cations are held strongly (**adsorbed layer**), and further away the concentration decreases gradually with distance, forming a **diffuse layer** of ions. The negative particle surface together with this diffuse cloud of positive ions is called the **double diffuse layer**. Its thickness decreases as the salt concentration and the valence of the cations increase.

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. Soil compacted on the dry side of OMC mostly has which structure?
   A. Single-grained structure of rounded particles
   B. Dispersed, with particles aligned face to face
   C. Flocculated, with random edge-to-face contact
   D. Honeycomb structure with no particle contact
Answer: C. Too little water is present to separate particles, so they stay in random edge-to-face contact (flocculated). (Key point: Dry side structure)

2. On the wet side of OMC the structure becomes dispersed. Why?
   A. Air voids increase and push particles apart
   B. Less water allows particles to interlock tightly
   C. Water dissolves the clay minerals
   D. More water increases repulsion so particles rotate and align face to face
Answer: D. Extra water increases repulsion between particles, letting them rotate into a parallel, face-to-face arrangement. (Key point: Wet side structure)

3. The double diffuse layer consists of:
   A. Positive particle surface plus anions
   B. The negative particle surface plus a diffuse cloud of positive ions
   C. Two sheets of silica around a gibbsite sheet
   D. Two layers of water molecules only
Answer: B. Clay surfaces are negative; with the diffuse cloud of cations the pair forms the double diffuse layer. (Key point: Double diffuse layer definition)

4. The DDL thickness decreases when:
   A. Water is added to the clay
   B. Cation valence decreases
   C. Salt concentration and cation valence increase
   D. Salt concentration decreases
Answer: C. Higher electrolyte concentration and higher valence compress the layer, making it thinner. (Key point: Thickness of DDL)
