## Question

(a) Explain the working of an automotive alternator and charging circuit with the function of the voltage regulator. (b) Describe the starting system with its main parts, including the starter motor and solenoid.

## Short answer

The alternator is a three‑phase AC generator with a rotating field and diode rectifier, charging the battery and powering loads; the voltage regulator switches field current to hold 13.8–14.4 V. The starter is a series‑wound DC motor; its solenoid engages the pinion with the flywheel gear and closes high‑current contacts; an overrunning clutch prevents overspeeding after engine start.

## Answer

#### (a) Alternator and charging system

The alternator supplies the electrical loads and recharges the battery while the engine runs. It is preferred to a DC generator because it gives output even at idle, is light and has no commutator.

```text
 Rotor (field winding, slip rings) in stator (3-phase winding)
 Stator -> 6-diode rectifier -> B+ (battery, loads)
 Voltage regulator -> controls field current
```

- **Rotor:** a claw-pole electromagnet whose field winding is fed through slip rings and brushes; it is driven by the engine belt.
- **Stator:** a fixed three-phase winding in a laminated core, in which AC is induced as the rotor field cuts the conductors.
- **Rectifier:** six silicon diodes change the AC to DC.
- **Voltage regulator:** senses the system voltage and varies the field current (by switching) to keep the output at 13.8 to 14.4 V at any speed and load. Without it, the output would rise with speed, since the induced emf depends on speed and field strength.
- A charge-warning lamp lights when the alternator is not charging.

#### (b) Starting system

```text
 Battery -> Ignition switch -> Solenoid -> Starter motor
                                |-> shift lever -> pinion -> flywheel ring gear
```

- **Starter motor:** a series-wound DC motor that gives very high torque at low speed, drawing about 150 to 300 A.
- **Solenoid (magnetic switch):** when the key is turned, the solenoid pulls its plunger. This closes the heavy contacts that feed the motor and moves the shift lever, which pushes the **pinion** into mesh with the flywheel ring gear (pre-engaged drive). In the older inertia (Bendix) drive, the pinion is thrown into mesh by its own inertia instead of by a lever.
- **Overrunning clutch:** lets the pinion transmit torque to the engine, but frees it once the engine starts, so the armature is not over-speeded.
- The gear ratio between the ring gear and the pinion is about 10:1 to 15:1.

A starter relay and a neutral safety switch may also be in the circuit.

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. Why is an alternator preferred to a DC generator?
   A. It has no brushes or slip rings
   B. It needs no regulator
   C. It gives output even at idle, is light and has no commutator
   D. It produces DC directly
   Answer: C. The alternator charges even at idle and avoids the commutator; it uses slip rings for the rotor field. (Key point: Alternator advantage)

2. What is the role of the six diodes?
   A. Supply field current
   B. Change the stator AC to DC
   C. Regulate voltage
   D. Step up voltage
   Answer: B. The stator induces three-phase AC; the six-diode rectifier converts it to DC for battery and loads. (Key point: Rectifier)

3. How does the voltage regulator keep output constant?
   A. By changing the stator turns
   B. By slipping the belt
   C. By switching the battery off
   D. By varying the field current to hold 13.8 to 14.4 V at any speed
   Answer: D. Output would rise with speed, so the regulator senses voltage and varies field current. (Key point: Voltage regulator)

4. What do the solenoid and overrunning clutch do?
   A. Solenoid regulates voltage; clutch locks the pinion
   B. Solenoid frees the pinion; clutch closes contacts
   C. Both only protect against over-current
   D. Solenoid closes contacts and engages the pinion; the clutch frees the pinion once the engine starts
   Answer: D. The clutch prevents the armature over-speeding when the engine fires. (Key point: Starter solenoid and clutch)
