## Question

Choose the correct words from the brackets:
a) Many a flower ........... born to blush unseen. (is, are)
b) Every boy and every girl ........... given sweets. (was, were)
c) He is absent ........... the class. (from, in)
d) Steel is made ........... iron. (of, from)
e) I saw him ........... the race. (win, to win)
f) If he comes to me, I ........... him. (help, would help)
g) If one buys a car, it ........... money. (cost, costs)
h) I should be ........... . (listened to, listened)
i) He, along with his teachers, ........... playing. (is, are)
j) The principal and accountant ........... on leave. (is, are)

## Short answer

a) is, b) was, c) from, d) from, e) win, f) help, g) costs, h) listened to, i) is, j) is.

## Answer

a) **is**: "Many a" is followed by a singular noun and verb.
b) **was**: "Every boy and every girl" takes a singular verb.
c) **from**: "absent from" the class.
d) **from**: the material is changed (iron becomes steel), so "made from" is used.
e) **win**: bare infinitive after "saw him", showing the whole action.
f) **help**: the "if" clause is in the simple present, so "would help" does not fit; of the two options only "help" is possible (the usual first-conditional form would be "will help").
g) **costs**: "If one buys ..., it costs money" (general truth, singular "it").
h) **listened to**: the preposition is kept in the passive.
i) **is**: "along with his teachers" does not change the singular subject.
j) **is**: the article "The" is used only once, so "principal and accountant" refers to one person holding both posts, and the verb is singular. (For two different people, the article is repeated: "The principal and the accountant are on leave.")
