## Question

What are the tips to make any writing coherent and concise? Does avoiding redundancy lead to concise writing?

## Short answer

Coherent writing uses planning, topic sentences, logical order, transitions, key terms, parallel structure, and headings. Concise writing removes wordiness, prefers short words, active voice, avoids empty phrases, and edits ruthlessly. Avoiding redundancy does help conciseness but is only one part; all unnecessary words should be removed while keeping clarity.

## Answer

#### Tips for coherent writing
Coherence means that the ideas are logically connected and flow smoothly.
1. **Plan and outline** the ideas before writing, with one main idea for each paragraph.
2. **Use a topic sentence** to begin each paragraph and keep all other sentences related to it.
3. **Arrange ideas logically**: in time order, order of importance, cause and effect, or general to specific.
4. **Use transitions** (first, therefore, however, in addition, as a result) to link sentences and paragraphs.
5. **Repeat key terms or use pronouns** to keep the topic visible.
6. **Use parallel structure** for lists and comparisons.
7. **Use headings, numbering and lists** in technical documents.

#### Tips for concise writing
Conciseness means expressing the message in the fewest words without losing meaning.
1. Remove unnecessary words and wordy phrases ("due to the fact that" becomes "because").
2. Prefer short, simple words and sentences.
3. Use the active voice and strong verbs.
4. Avoid empty openings ("It is important to note that").
5. Do not repeat ideas or add irrelevant details.
6. Use lists and tables to replace long explanations.
7. Edit and revise to cut extra words.

#### Does avoiding redundancy lead to concise writing?
Yes, partly. Redundancy means saying the same thing twice ("end result", "free gift", "repeat again"). Removing it shortens the text and makes it concise. But redundancy is only one source of wordiness; conciseness also requires removing wordy phrases, unnecessary details and passive constructions. Concise writing must still be complete and clear, so only unnecessary words should be removed.
