## Question

Describe the contribution of Einstein to the modern scientific world?

## Short answer

Einstein revolutionized science with special relativity (space-time depends on motion), E=mc² (mass-energy equivalence), general relativity (gravity as space-time curvature), and the photoelectric effect (light quanta). His work underlies GPS, nuclear power, and lasers, and highlighted imagination's role in discovery.

## Answer

Albert Einstein (1879-1955) is regarded as the greatest physicist of the modern age. His ideas changed our understanding of space, time, matter and energy, and they underlie much of modern science and technology.

#### Main contributions
1. **Special theory of relativity (1905).** Einstein showed that the speed of light is constant for all observers and that space and time are not absolute but depend on the observer's motion. Time slows and length contracts at very high speed.
2. **Mass-energy equivalence, E = mc².** Mass and energy are interchangeable. This explains the energy of the sun and stars and made nuclear power possible.
3. **General theory of relativity (1915).** Gravity is not a force acting at a distance but the curvature of space-time by matter. It correctly explained the orbit of Mercury, the bending of starlight, and later black holes and the expanding universe.
4. **Photoelectric effect.** He explained that light energy comes in packets (quanta, later called photons). For this work he won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1921. It helped found quantum theory and led to solar cells and electronic sensors.
5. **Brownian motion.** His 1905 explanation gave strong evidence that atoms and molecules exist.

#### Importance
- His theories replaced Newton's ideas at very high speeds and in strong gravity.
- Modern applications such as GPS (which corrects for relativistic time effects), lasers, nuclear energy and cosmology depend on his work.
- He also showed the value of imagination and persistent questioning in science.

His contribution therefore lies both in a new way of understanding the universe and in its practical results.

1. What did the special theory of relativity show?
   A. Gravity is a force acting at a distance
   B. Atoms exist
   C. The speed of light is constant and space and time depend on the observer's motion
   D. Light travels as a continuous wave only
Answer: C. Time slows and length contracts at very high speed. (Key point: Special relativity)

2. What does E = mc^2 imply?
   A. Mass and energy are interchangeable
   B. Energy cannot be created from anything
   C. Light has no energy
   D. Mass is absolute and fixed
Answer: A. It explains stellar energy and made nuclear power possible. (Key point: E = mc^2)

3. How does general relativity describe gravity?
   A. As a force acting instantly at a distance
   B. As electric attraction
   C. As the curvature of space-time by matter
   D. As a quantum particle only
Answer: C. It explained Mercury's orbit and the bending of starlight. (Key point: General relativity)

4. For what work did Einstein win the 1921 Nobel Prize in Physics?
   A. Explaining the photoelectric effect
   B. The theory of relativity
   C. Brownian motion
   D. E = mc^2
Answer: A. He explained that light travels in quanta (photons), helping found quantum theory. (Key point: Nobel Prize)
