## Question

How do modern boilers function? (Steam Boilers)

## Short answer

A modern water-tube boiler burns fuel to heat water in tubes, producing steam that collects in a drum and passes through a superheater for dryness and higher temperature. It then drives a turbine. Efficiency is improved by recovering waste heat from flue gases.

## Answer

A boiler is a closed vessel in which water is heated under pressure to produce steam for power generation, heating or industrial processes. The following describes the working of a modern water-tube boiler.

#### Main parts
- **Furnace:** the fuel (coal, oil, gas or biomass) is burned here.
- **Water tubes and drums:** tubes filled with water run through the hot gases; a steam drum collects the steam.
- **Superheater:** heats the steam further so that it is dry and at higher temperature.
- **Economiser and air pre-heater:** use waste heat of flue gases to warm feed water and air.
- **Feed pump, safety valve, pressure gauge, water-level gauge and chimney.**

#### Working
```text
 Fuel + air --> FURNACE --> hot gases
                              |
   feed water --> water tubes (heated)
                              |
                       STEAM DRUM
                              |
                        SUPERHEATER
                              |
                    steam to turbine/engine
```
1. Feed water is pumped into the boiler through the economiser.
2. Fuel burns in the furnace; hot flue gases flow over the water tubes.
3. Water in the tubes becomes steam and rises, while cooler water descends, giving natural circulation.
4. Steam collects in the drum and passes to the superheater, where its temperature rises well above boiling point without a rise in pressure.
5. The dry, high-pressure steam goes to the turbine or engine. Exhaust steam is condensed and returned as feed water.
6. Flue gases leave through the chimney after giving up heat.

#### Safety and control
Safety valves release excess pressure; the water-level gauge and automatic feed control avoid overheating of tubes; pressure controllers adjust the fuel supply.

Modern boilers are efficient because they use a large heating surface, high pressure, superheating and waste-heat recovery.

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. In a water-tube boiler, where is the water relative to the hot gases?
   A. Outside tubes, with gases inside the tubes
   B. Inside tubes that run through the hot gases
   C. In a tank away from the furnace
   D. Mixed with the fuel
   Answer: B. Tubes filled with water run through the hot gases and a steam drum collects the steam. (Key point: Water-tube boiler)

2. How does natural circulation occur?
   A. A pump pushes all water round the tubes
   B. Steam sinks and water rises
   C. Water stays still in the tubes
   D. Heated water becomes steam and rises while cooler water descends
   Answer: D. The density difference drives the circulation. (Key point: Natural circulation)

3. What does the superheater do?
   A. Condenses the steam back to water
   B. Raises steam temperature well above boiling point without raising pressure
   C. Increases the water level
   D. Reduces the steam temperature
   Answer: B. It makes the steam dry and hotter. (Key point: Superheater)

4. What is the use of an economiser and air pre-heater?
   A. They release excess pressure
   B. They measure the water level
   C. They add fuel to the furnace
   D. They use waste heat of flue gases to warm feed water and air
   Answer: D. Waste-heat recovery improves efficiency. (Key point: Economiser)
