## Question

Read the given text and interpret its meaning;
The forms and functions of verbal communication vary significantly around the world and reflect striking differences in values and beliefs. These culturally learned patterns usually function on a highly unconscious level and can result in serious conflict, misunderstanding, and negative stereotyping when people from different cultures interact. To minimize such tensions and problems and to enhance intercultural communication, international travelers should be aware of their own speaking style and the ways it differs from that of the culture they are visiting. By increasing their knowledge of what people in the host country tend to say and how they tend to say it, international visitors will be able to traverse the minefield of cultural differences and adjust to the new environment more easily.

## Short answer

Verbal communication patterns vary across cultures, reflecting values and beliefs, often unconsciously. These differences can cause serious misunderstanding and conflict. Travellers should become aware of their own speaking style and learn the host culture’s verbal habits to navigate cultural differences and adapt smoothly.

## Answer

The passage says that people from different cultures talk differently because of their values and beliefs, that these differences can cause conflict, and that travellers should learn about them.

#### Explanation
- **Variation across cultures.** How people speak and for what purpose (formal or informal, direct or indirect, how much they say) differs widely, because it reflects each culture's values and beliefs.
- **Unconscious habits.** These speech patterns are learned from childhood and used without thinking. People are rarely aware of them.
- **Risk.** When people from different cultures meet, such habits can lead to serious conflict, misunderstanding and negative stereotyping. For example, a direct manner may seem rude to one group and honest to another.
- **Remedy.** International travellers should become aware of their own speaking style and of how it differs from that of the host culture. They should also learn what people in the host country tend to say and how they say it.
- **Metaphor.** Cultural differences are a "minefield": a dangerous area where an unknowing step can cause damage. With knowledge, visitors can cross it safely and adjust to the new environment more easily.

#### Message
Understanding both our own and others' communication styles reduces misunderstanding and makes intercultural communication smoother.
