## Question

You have been asked by the Ministry of Civil Aviation of Nepal to inspect any three airports of mountainous areas of Nepal. Supposing that you have conducted your survey, write a letter report focusing on existing conditions and recommendations. Invent necessary details.

## Short answer

I inspected Lukla (527 m, cracked surface, poor drainage), Jomsom (740 m, worn surface, no fence), and Simikot (550 m, loose edges). Common problems: short runways, unpredictable weather, lacking equipment. Recommendations: resurface runways, improve drainage, install weather stations, add fire-fighting vehicles, enforce safety limits.

Subject: Report on inspection of three mountain airports

Dear Sir,

As requested in your letter of 2 October 2026, I inspected
the airports at Lukla, Jomsom and Simikot from 5 to 15
November 2026. This letter reports their existing
condition and my recommendations.
```
#### Existing conditions
| Airport | Runway | Condition |
|---|---|---|
| Lukla (Solukhumbu) | About 527 m, steep slope | Surface cracked in places; poor drainage; terminal crowded in the tourist season; limited weather information |
| Jomsom (Mustang) | About 740 m | Strong afternoon winds; worn surface; no proper fence, so animals sometimes enter; old terminal |
| Simikot (Humla) | About 550 m, short and narrow | Loose edges; poor drainage; old fire-fighting equipment; no instrument navigation aids |
Common problems at all three: unpredictable weather, short runways, a shortage of trained staff and navigational equipment, a lack of emergency rescue vehicles, and small maintenance budgets.
#### Recommendations
1. Resurface the runways and improve the drains and the perimeter fences.
2. Install modern weather stations, wind sensors and radio navigation aids.
3. Provide fire-fighting and rescue vehicles, and train staff every year.
4. Enlarge the terminals and add safe waiting areas and passenger facilities.
5. Allow flights only in approved visual and weather conditions, and set load limits.
6. Create a maintenance fund for each airport.
I believe that these steps will improve the safety and reliability of the airports. I would be glad to give a detailed technical report if you wish.
Yours faithfully,
Er. Sunil Gurung
The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.
1. What are the two main things the letter report must focus on, as asked in the question?
   A. Existing conditions and recommendations
   B. Costs and profits
   C. History and future plans of aviation
   D. Staff names and salaries
   Answer: A. The report is asked to describe the existing conditions of the airports and give recommendations. (Key point: Purpose of a letter report)
2. What does the opening paragraph of the letter do?
   A. Lists the recommendations immediately
   B. Refers to the request, states which airports were inspected and when, and the purpose of the letter
   C. Complains about the Ministry
   D. Asks for payment for the inspection
   Answer: B. It refers to the Ministry's letter, names Lukla, Jomsom and Simikot, gives the dates and states the letter reports conditions and recommendations. (Key point: Opening paragraph)
3. Why are the conditions of the three airports presented in a table, followed by common problems?
   A. To make the letter longer
   B. Because letters cannot contain paragraphs
   C. To compare each airport's runway and condition clearly and then summarise shared problems
   D. To hide the weak points
   Answer: C. A table lets the reader compare airports at a glance; common problems such as weather, short runways and lack of rescue vehicles are then summarised. (Key point: Presenting existing conditions)
4. Which recommendation addresses the problem of unpredictable weather and poor navigation?
   A. Enlarge terminals
   B. Prepare a maintenance fund
   C. Resurface the runways
   D. Install modern weather stations, wind sensors and radio navigation aids
   Answer: D. Weather stations, wind sensors and navigation aids directly address limited weather information and navigation equipment. (Key point: Matching recommendations to problems)
