## Question

Read the following passage carefully, make notes and write a summary of it.
The dearth of natural resources on the Australian continent is a problem with which government officials have long struggled. [passage of about 300 words on tourism, Aboriginal land and sacred natural sites in Australia] ... The Australian government has dealt with this dilemma thus far by trying to support both sides. The Aboriginal council is still trying to put an end to such use of certain sites, however, and it remains to be seen whether respect for tradition or economic desires will ultimately triumph.

## Short answer

Australia depends on tourism revenue, but returning land to Aboriginal people restricts access to sacred sites that are also key attractions, threatening local income. The government seeks a balance, but the Aboriginal council wants a ban, and it is unclear whether tradition or economic need will win.

## Answer

#### Notes
**Title: Tourism and Aboriginal land in Australia**

1. **Background**
   - Australia has few natural resources
   - Tourism gives over 10% of export earnings; higher in less developed regions (e.g., Western Territory)
2. **Problem**
   - Move to return some land to Aboriginal people
   - Western settlement pushed tribal people inland; government respects their traditional way of life
3. **Conflict**
   - Aboriginal belief: certain natural formations are sacred
   - Strict rules on who may visit and when
   - Many such sites are the main tourist attractions
   - Ban on outsiders may reduce tourism and income in a needy region
4. **Government response**
   - Tries to support both sides
   - Aboriginal council still wants to end tourist use of the sites
   - Result unknown: tradition or economy?

#### Summary
Australia has few natural resources, so tourism, which earns over ten percent of export income, is vital, especially in poorer regions. However, the government is returning some land to the Aboriginal people, whose religion treats certain natural formations as sacred and restricts visits to them. Since these places are also major tourist attractions, a ban on visitors could hurt the local economy. The government is trying to satisfy both sides, but the Aboriginal council wants tourist use stopped, and it is uncertain whether tradition or economic need will prevail.
