## Question

Read the following passage carefully, make notes and write a summary.
Although religion does not inhibit the acquisition of wealth, although it does not hold up large fortunes as evil, the tenor of its teaching, by and large, is to induce an attitude of indifference to worldly things ... [passage of about 450 words on religion, spiritual values and the problem of wealth] ... All rights to private property are subject to this primary obligation to God and man.

## Short answer

Religion does not condemn wealth, but urges detachment from material things, as true goods are spiritual. Wealth is a trust from God; charity is a duty of justice, and private property rights are subordinate to obligations to God and fellow humans.

## Answer

#### Notes
**Title: Religion and the problem of wealth**

1. **Religion's attitude to wealth**
   - Does not forbid earning wealth; does not call big fortunes evil
   - Teaches indifference to worldly things that feed the lower self
   - Real goods of life: spiritual things, love, service of others, ordered life; money cannot buy them
2. **Jesus Christ's teaching**
   - Greatest teacher on wealth; "Blessed are ye poor!" changed man's values
   - Real bliss = peace with fellow men through love, fellowship, selfless service
   - "Poor" = poor in spirit: humble, God-fearing, teachable, faithful
   - Not praise of destitution; money is needed even for spiritual life
   - Extreme poverty harms the soul as much as excess wealth
3. **Wealth as a trust**
   - All religions: wealth is held in trust from God
   - Charity = compassion, duty and social justice
   - No absolute right to property; private property subject to duty to God and man

#### Summary
Religion does not condemn earning wealth, but it teaches detachment from worldly things, because the true goods of life, such as love, service and a disciplined life, cannot be bought. Jesus Christ, by calling the poor blessed, meant those who are poor in spirit, not those in misery; he did not praise destitution, since extreme poverty harms the soul as much as excessive wealth. All religions regard wealth as a trust from God. Charity is therefore social justice, and the right to property is always limited by one's duty to God and fellow human beings.
