These changes have altered industry, education and daily life, and have also created new ethical and workforce challenges. In the last decade, the speed of progress has been very high, and technologies that were research topics have become everyday tools. #### Major advancements 1. **Artificial intelligence and machine learning:** deep learning produced large improvements in image recognition, speech, translation and, since 2022, generative AI that writes text, code and images. 2. **Cloud computing:** computing, storage and software are now rented over the internet, so even small companies can use powerful servers. 3. **Internet of Things (IoT):** billions of sensors and smart devices connect homes, farms and factories. 4. **Mobile and networks:** 4G is widespread, and 5G offers higher speed and lower delay; fibre networks have expanded. 5. **Hardware:** smaller and more energy-efficient processors, graphics processors for AI, and progress towards quantum computers. 6. **Cyber security and blockchain:** stronger encryption, multi-factor authentication, and distributed ledgers for secure transactions. 7. **Software engineering:** DevOps, open source tools and low-code platforms speed up development. #### Impact and issues These advances improved health care, banking, education and communication, but raised issues such as privacy, bias in AI, job changes, e-waste and energy consumption of data centres. In Nepal, the growth of digital payments, online education and IT outsourcing reflects these global trends. #### Conclusion The last decade has been a period of rapid change in computer engineering.
