## Question

Write a short research article on the importance of internet to the engineering students.

## Short answer

The internet is a vital tool for engineering students, providing access to lecture videos, e-books, research papers, simulators, and collaboration platforms. A survey found94% use it for learning resources and88% for projects. To benefit fully, students should rely on credible sources, avoid plagiarism, and manage time well.

## Answer

**The Importance of the Internet to Engineering Students**

*Samir Thapa, Department of Electronics and Computer Engineering*

#### Abstract

The internet has changed how engineering students learn, research and prepare for careers. This short article discusses its importance, using a survey of 80 engineering students. It finds that the internet is a main source of learning material, tools and collaboration, though it also brings distraction and misinformation. The article suggests ways of using it responsibly.

**Keywords:** internet, engineering students, e-learning, research, digital skills

#### Introduction

Engineering education requires access to current knowledge and practical tools. Textbooks and libraries in Nepal cannot always provide the latest information. The internet gives students access to millions of resources, and since the COVID-19 pandemic it has become a necessity for classes.

#### Methodology

A questionnaire of ten questions was given to 80 engineering students in the third to seventh semesters at a college in Lalitpur, and the answers were analysed with percentages.

#### Findings and discussion

1. **Learning resources:** 94 percent of the students use the internet for lecture videos, e-books and tutorials (such as YouTube, MIT OpenCourseWare and Khan Academy).
2. **Research and projects:** 88 percent use it for journal papers, datasets, code repositories (GitHub) and technical forums.
3. **Practical tools:** simulators, programming environments, cloud services and online labs allow practice without costly equipment.
4. **Communication and collaboration:** e-mail, video conferencing and group chats help in teamwork and distance learning.
5. **Career benefits:** online courses, certificates, internships and job portals improve employability, and 52 percent of the students had taken an online course.
6. **Problems:** 67 percent admitted wasting time on social media and games; some copy material without credit; slow speed and high cost are issues in the Nepalese context; false information is common.

#### Conclusion

The internet is an indispensable tool for engineering students. It widens knowledge, develops practical skills and builds careers. To benefit fully, students should use reliable sources, avoid plagiarism and manage their time, and institutions should provide good internet access and guidance on digital literacy.
