## Short answer

i) which; ii) that; iii) is; iv) have; v) so to speak; vi) take; vii) He asked the reason for my coming; viii) When Queen Victoria reigned, there were many wars; ix) winning; x) that.

## Answer

1. He is here, **which** is fortunate. (A relative pronoun referring to the whole clause.)
2. I played with the same bat **that** you did. ("same" is followed by "that"; "as" is also used.)
3. More than one player **is** playing outside at present. ("More than one" takes a singular verb.)
4. He is one of the best leaders who **have** served the nation perfectly. (The relative "who" refers to the plural "leaders".)
5. They were petrified, **so to speak**, on hearing this news. ("So to speak" is a fixed infinitive phrase meaning "as it were"; "petrified" is used figuratively.)
6. I had rather **take** this than that. ("had rather" is followed by the bare infinitive.)
7. He asked **the reason for my coming.** (Simple sentence: the noun clause is turned into a phrase.)
8. **When Queen Victoria reigned**, there were many wars. (The phrase becomes an adverbial clause of time.)
9. She is working hard with a view to **winning** this competition. ("to" in "with a view to" is a preposition, so it takes the gerund.)
10. This is the same woman **that** attended the party last week. ("same" takes "that".)
