## Question

Explain key components of a virtual reality system in brief.

## Short answer

Key components include a head-mounted display for stereoscopic view, tracking sensors for head/hand pose, input controllers, a computer/GPU to render at high frame rates, VR software, and spatial audio/haptic feedback.

## Answer

A **virtual reality (VR) system** creates a computer-generated 3D environment that the user can enter and interact with in real time. Key components:

```text
 Sensors/Trackers --> Computer (CPU+GPU, VR software)
 Input devices   -->        |
                            v
        Head-mounted display, audio, haptics --> User
```

1. **Head-mounted display (HMD):** shows a separate stereoscopic image to each eye with a wide field of view, giving the 3D effect (e.g. Oculus, HTC Vive).
2. **Tracking sensors:** gyroscope, accelerometer, cameras and base stations track the position and orientation of the head and hands so the view changes with movement.
3. **Input devices:** hand controllers, data gloves, treadmills, voice input to interact with the virtual world.
4. **Computer / graphics processing unit:** renders the 3D scene at a high frame rate (at least 60 to 90 fps) with low latency to avoid motion sickness.
5. **VR software and database:** the 3D models, physics engine and rendering software (Unity, Unreal Engine) that define the virtual world.
6. **Audio and haptic devices:** 3D spatial sound and force/touch feedback to increase immersion.

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. The HMD
   A. shows a separate stereoscopic image to each eye
   B. tracks hands only
   C. renders the scene
   D. stores models
   Answer: A. Gives the 3D effect. (Key point: HMD)

2. Tracking sensors
   A. draw 3D sound
   B. track head and hand position/orientation so the view changes
   C. hold the database
   D. render frames
   Answer: B. Gyroscope, accelerometer, cameras. (Key point: Tracking)

3. VR frame rate should be at least
   A. 5 fps
   B. 24 fps only
   C. 60 to 90 fps with low latency
   D. 10 fps
   Answer: C. Avoids motion sickness. (Key point: Frame rate)

4. Haptic devices provide
   A. stereo images
   B. tracking
   C. rendering
   D. touch/force feedback
   Answer: D. Increase immersion. (Key point: Haptics)
