## Question

List the advantages and disadvantages of the Z-buffer algorithm.

## Short answer

Advantages: simple to implement, no object sorting, handles any surface type, incremental depth computation, and easy addition of new objects. Disadvantages: requires a full depth buffer, cannot handle transparency, suffers aliasing, wastes time on hidden surfaces, and has limited depth precision.

## Answer

#### Advantages
1. Simple to implement, in software or hardware.
2. Needs no sorting of objects, and polygons can be processed in any order.
3. Works with any type of surface (including intersecting surfaces) and complex scenes.
4. Execution time is nearly independent of scene complexity; each pixel is handled by simple comparisons.
5. Depth is computed incrementally by additions only (fast).
6. New objects can be added easily to an existing image.

#### Disadvantages
1. Needs extra memory for the depth buffer (same size as the frame buffer).
2. Cannot handle transparent or translucent surfaces; only the nearest surface is kept.
3. Aliasing: no anti-aliasing, as only one depth and colour is stored per pixel.
4. Time is wasted on hidden surfaces (overdraw).
5. Limited depth resolution may cause z-fighting between close surfaces.
6. Buffers must be cleared for every frame.

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. Which is an advantage of the Z-buffer?
   A. Polygons can be processed in any order without sorting
   B. It handles transparency
   C. It needs no extra memory
   D. It is anti-aliased
Answer: A. The per-pixel depth test makes the order irrelevant. (Key point: Advantage: order)

2. Why can it not render translucent surfaces?
   A. Depth cannot be computed
   B. Only the nearest surface is kept per pixel
   C. It needs sorted polygons
   D. It works only on convex shapes
Answer: B. Surfaces behind are discarded, so nothing is left to blend. (Key point: Disadvantage: transparency)

3. How is depth computed efficiently?
   A. By multiplying matrices per pixel
   B. By sorting depths each frame
   C. Incrementally by additions only
   D. By ray casting each pixel
Answer: C. Constant increments like A/C are added along the scan line. (Key point: Depth calculation)

4. What causes z-fighting between close surfaces?
   A. Missing frame buffer
   B. Transparent surfaces
   C. Back-face culling
   D. Limited depth resolution
Answer: D. Quantised depth cannot distinguish very close values. (Key point: Z-fighting)
