## Question

Explain the functional view and four types of operations used in a computer.

## Short answer

The functional view sees a computer as performing data movement, storage, processing, and control. The four operation types are: moving data between peripherals, storing external data into memory, processing data already in memory, and processing stored data then sending the result to an I/O device.

## Answer

The functional view of a computer shows it as a system that performs operations on data under the control of a program. It has four main functions: data movement, data storage, data processing and control.

            +-----------------------+
            |   Control mechanism   |
            +-----------+-----------+
                        |  (controls all parts)
            +-----------+-----------+

            |     |           |     |
            |   Data        Data    |
            |   storage     processing
            +-----------------------+
```
#### The four functions
1. **Data processing:** the computer performs arithmetic and logic operations on data (add, compare, shift). The ALU does this work.
2. **Data storage:** the computer keeps data and programs. Short-term storage is in registers and main memory; long-term storage is on disks and tapes.
3. **Data movement:** data is moved between the computer and the outside world, or inside it.
   - *Input-output:* data moves to or from a directly attached device (peripheral).
   - *Data communication:* data moves over a longer distance to or from a remote device.
4. **Control:** the control unit manages the other functions. It fetches instructions from memory and issues timing and control signals so that the operations happen in the right order.
#### Four possible types of operation
- **Data movement:** data passes from one peripheral to another, for example from the keyboard to the screen.
- **Storage:** data from the outside world is stored, for example a file downloaded from the network into memory.
- **Processing of stored data:** data in storage is processed and the result is stored back, for example a = b + c with all values in memory.
- **Processing between storage and I/O:** stored data is processed and the result is sent to an I/O device, for example printing a report.
## Check yourself
The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.
1. Which is NOT one of the four functional operations?
   A. Data compilation
   B. Data processing
   C. Data storage
   D. Control
   Answer: A. The four are data movement, storage, processing and control. (Key point: Four operations)
2. What does the control unit do?
   A. Performs arithmetic
   B. Stores long-term data
   C. Manages other operations by fetching instructions and issuing timing and control signals
   D. Moves data to remote devices
   Answer: C. Control orders the other operations. (Key point: Control)
3. What is the difference between input-output and data communication?
   A. I/O is with a directly attached device; communication is over a longer distance to a remote device
   B. I/O is storage; communication is processing
   C. They are the same
   D. Communication is only inside the CPU
   Answer: A. Both are forms of data movement. (Key point: I/O vs communication)
4. Which is short-term storage?
   A. Disks
   B. Tapes
   C. Registers and main memory
   D. Remote servers
   Answer: C. Disks and tapes are long-term. (Key point: Short vs long term storage)
