## Question

Explain Bogue's compounds of cement and their role in the properties and strength development of concrete.

## Short answer

Bogue's compounds are C3S (early strength, high heat), C2S (later strength, low heat), C3A (flash set, very high heat, sulfate attack) and C4AF (flux, little strength). C3S and C2S form C-S-H gel, governing early and long-term strength respectively; C3A is controlled by gypsum.

## Answer

**Bogue's compounds** are the four main compounds formed in the kiln when limestone and clay are burnt to clinker (at about 1450 °C). Their percentages are calculated from the oxide analysis of the cement using Bogue's equations. In cement chemistry notation, C = CaO, S = SiO$_2$, A = Al$_2$O$_3$ and F = Fe$_2$O$_3$.

| Compound | Formula | Approx. % | Hydration rate | Heat of hydration |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tricalcium silicate (alite) | $3CaO\cdot SiO_2$ (C$_3$S) | 40-55 | Fast | High (~500 J/g) |
| Dicalcium silicate (belite) | $2CaO\cdot SiO_2$ (C$_2$S) | 20-30 | Slow | Low (~260 J/g) |
| Tricalcium aluminate (celite) | $3CaO\cdot Al_2O_3$ (C$_3$A) | 8-12 | Very fast | Very high (~870 J/g) |
| Tetracalcium aluminoferrite | $4CaO\cdot Al_2O_3\cdot Fe_2O_3$ (C$_4$AF) | 8-12 | Moderate | Moderate (~420 J/g) |

#### Role in properties and strength
- **C$_3$S**: hydrates within hours to days. It gives the early strength (up to 7 days) and much of the 28-day strength, and releases a lot of heat and $Ca(OH)_2$. Cement with more C$_3$S is rapid-hardening.
- **C$_2$S**: hydrates slowly, so it contributes little in the first weeks but provides the strength gained after 28 days (up to about 1 year). It releases little heat and gives better resistance to chemical attack, so low-heat cement is high in C$_2$S.
- **C$_3$A**: reacts instantly with water and causes flash set, so gypsum is added to control it. It adds little to strength (only some at 1 day), liberates a large amount of heat, and is the compound attacked by sulphates (it forms ettringite, which expands). Sulphate-resisting cement keeps it below 5%.
- **C$_4$AF**: contributes very little to strength; it acts as a flux in the kiln and gives cement its grey colour. It is fairly resistant to sulphates.

#### Strength development
Early strength is governed by C$_3$S and later strength by C$_2$S. Together, C$_3$S and C$_2$S form about 70-80 per cent of the cement and produce the C-S-H gel, which is the main strength-giving product.

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. Which Bogue compound mainly gives early strength (up to 7 days) and much of the 28-day strength?
   A. C3S
   B. C2S
   C. C3A
   D. C4AF
Answer: A. C3S hydrates fast, releasing much heat and Ca(OH)2, and so governs early strength. (Key point: C3S role)

2. Why is C2S high in low-heat cement?
   A. It reacts instantly and gives flash set
   B. It hydrates slowly and releases little heat, giving strength after 28 days
   C. It acts as a flux in the kiln
   D. It gives the highest heat of hydration
Answer: B. C2S is slow, low in heat and gives later strength and chemical resistance. (Key point: C2S role)

3. What is the purpose of adding gypsum with respect to C3A?
   A. To raise the C3A content
   B. To increase early strength from C3A
   C. To control the instant reaction of C3A that causes flash set
   D. To make C3A sulphate resistant by forming more ettringite expansion
Answer: C. C3A reacts instantly with water; gypsum controls it and prevents flash set. (Key point: C3A role)

4. What is done to make sulphate-resisting cement?
   A. Increase C3A to above 12%
   B. Increase C3S to give rapid hardening
   C. Remove C2S
   D. Keep C3A below about 5%
Answer: D. C3A is attacked by sulphates (ettringite, expansion), so it is kept low. (Key point: Sulphate resistance)
