## Question

Mention the advantages and disadvantages of analog and digital communication systems.

## Short answer

Analog systems are simple, require less bandwidth, but noise accumulates and error correction is not possible. Digital systems allow regenerative repeaters, error detection/correction, encryption, compression, and multiplexing, but need more bandwidth, analog-to-digital conversion, and synchronization.

## Answer

#### Analog communication
**Advantages**
- Simple, cheap equipment for short-distance links (AM/FM radio).
- Needs less bandwidth for the same message than digital transmission.
- Directly matches natural signals (voice, video), so no conversion is needed.

**Disadvantages**
- Noise and distortion are amplified along with the signal and cannot be removed.
- Hard to detect or correct errors, and weak security.
- Difficult to store, multiplex and process; quality falls with every copy.

#### Digital communication
**Advantages**
- Regenerative repeaters rebuild the pulses, so noise does not accumulate over long distances.
- Error detection and correction are possible (parity, CRC, Hamming).
- Easy encryption, compression and multiplexing (TDM); many data types (voice, video, text) share one network.
- Easy storage and processing by computers; stable, uniform quality; integrated circuits are cheap.

**Disadvantages**
- Needs more bandwidth than the analog form.
- Analog signals must be sampled and quantized, which adds quantization error.
- Needs synchronisation between transmitter and receiver.
- Conversion circuits (ADC/DAC) add cost and complexity.

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. Why does noise not accumulate in a digital link over long distances?
   A. Regenerative repeaters rebuild the pulses
   B. Digital signals use less bandwidth
   C. Digital signals are continuous
   D. Amplifiers boost only the signal
Answer: A. Repeaters regenerate clean pulses, whereas analog amplifiers boost noise with the signal. (Key point: Regeneration)

2. Which is a disadvantage of digital communication?
   A. Noise accumulates along the link
   B. It needs more bandwidth and adds quantization error
   C. Error correction is impossible
   D. It cannot be encrypted
Answer: B. Digital needs more bandwidth, sampling/quantization (quantization error), synchronisation and ADC/DAC. (Key point: Digital disadvantage)

3. Why is error correction hard in analog systems?
   A. Analog uses TDM
   B. Analog needs too much bandwidth
   C. Noise and distortion mix with the signal and cannot be separated
   D. Analog signals are discrete
Answer: C. Added noise is amplified with the signal and cannot be removed or detected. (Key point: Analog disadvantage)

4. Which is an advantage of analog systems?
   A. Easy error correction
   B. Easy encryption
   C. No quality loss in copying
   D. Simple, cheap equipment for short links and less bandwidth
Answer: D. Analog matches natural signals directly and needs no conversion, so equipment is simple (AM/FM radio). (Key point: Analog advantage)
