## Question

Compare guided and unguided transmission media.

## Short answer

Guided media (twisted pair, coax, fibre) confine signals in a cable, offering higher security, less interference, and fixed installation. Unguided media (radio, microwave, satellite) transmit through air, allowing mobility and easier deployment over wide areas but are more susceptible to interference, weather, and lower security due to broadcast nature.

## Answer

Guided media carry signals along a physical path (cable). Unguided media carry signals through free space (air, vacuum) as electromagnetic waves.

| Point | Guided media | Unguided media |
|---|---|---|
| Path | Physical cable | Free space (air / vacuum) |
| Examples | Twisted pair, coaxial, optical fibre | Radio waves, microwave, infrared, satellite |
| Also called | Wired / bounded media | Wireless / unbounded media |
| Direction | Signal confined to the cable | Broadcast in all directions or directed by an antenna |
| Mobility | Fixed | Allows mobility |
| Installation | Needs laying of cables; costly in difficult terrain | Easy, quick to set up |
| Interference | Less (shielded cable / fibre) | More, from weather, other users and obstacles |
| Security | Higher | Lower, since anyone in range can receive the signal |
| Bandwidth | Fibre very high | Limited by the spectrum allocated |
| Reliability | High | Affected by weather and fading |

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. What is the main difference between guided and unguided media?
   A. Guided use air; unguided use cables
   B. Guided carry signals along a physical cable; unguided use free space as EM waves
   C. Guided are only digital; unguided only analog
   D. Guided are always faster
Answer: B. Guided = wired/bounded; unguided = wireless. (Key point: Definition)

2. Why is security lower in unguided media?
   A. The signal is always weaker
   B. Cables are buried
   C. Spectrum is unlimited
   D. Anyone within range can receive the signal
Answer: D. Broadcast nature allows interception. (Key point: Security)

3. Which suffers more interference?
   A. Guided, because the cable picks up weather
   B. Both equally
   C. Unguided, from weather, other users and obstacles
   D. Neither
Answer: C. Shielded cable and fibre give less interference. (Key point: Interference)

4. Which pair is correct?
   A. Guided allows mobility; unguided is fixed
   B. Both are fixed
   C. Unguided needs cable laying in difficult terrain
   D. Unguided allows mobility and is quick to set up; guided is fixed and needs cable laying
Answer: D. Wireless needs no cable laying. (Key point: Mobility and installation)
