## Question

What is modulation? Why is it necessary?

## Short answer

Modulation varies a high-frequency carrier with the message signal. It enables practical antenna size, efficient radiation, multiplexing, noise immunity, and matching signals to the channel.

## Answer

**Modulation** is the process of varying a characteristic (amplitude, frequency or phase) of a high-frequency carrier signal in accordance with the instantaneous value of the low-frequency message (baseband) signal.

#### Why modulation is necessary
1. **Practical antenna size**: an antenna needs a length of about λ/4, with λ = c/f. For a 3 kHz audio signal λ = 100 km, so a 25 km antenna would be needed; for a 100 MHz carrier, λ/4 = 0.75 m.
2. **Efficient radiation**: low-frequency signals radiate poorly; high-frequency waves radiate and propagate well.
3. **Multiplexing**: many messages can share one channel by using different carrier frequencies (FDM). Without modulation, all would occupy the same band and interfere.
4. **Reducing noise and interference**: some types of modulation (such as FM) give better noise immunity.
5. **Matching to the channel**: it shifts the signal to a band that the medium can carry (e.g. digital data over a telephone line needs a modem).
6. **Longer range and less attenuation** at suitable frequencies, and easier equipment (amplifiers and filters) at higher frequencies.

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. Modulation varies:
   A. The message by the carrier only
   B. Bandwidth of the channel
   C. The antenna length
   D. Amplitude, frequency or phase of a high-frequency carrier by the message
Answer: D. Carrier is varied per message. (Key point: Definition)

2. For a 100 MHz carrier, antenna length (lambda/4) is about:
   A. 25 km
   B. 0.75 m
   C. 100 km
   D. 7.5 km
   Answer: B. lambda = 3 m, lambda/4 = 0.75 m. (Key point: Antenna size)

3. Why does modulation enable multiplexing?
   A. It removes the need for a channel
   B. Different carrier frequencies let many messages share a channel (FDM)
   C. It makes all signals the same frequency
   D. It reduces bandwidth to zero
Answer: B. Without it, all signals would overlap. (Key point: Multiplexing)

4. Why use high frequencies?
   A. High frequencies need bigger antennas
   B. They cannot propagate
   C. Low-frequency signals radiate poorly
   D. They are cheaper to amplify only
Answer: C. High-frequency waves radiate efficiently. (Key point: Radiation)
