## Question

Explain the various factors which will affect the regulation of an alternator.

## Short answer

Regulation depends on armature resistance and reactance drops, armature reaction (demagnetizing at lagging pf, magnetizing at leading), load power factor, load current magnitude, and saturation. Lagging pf increases regulation; leading pf can cause negative regulation.

## Answer

**Voltage regulation** of an alternator is the change in terminal voltage from no load to full load (speed and field current constant), expressed as a percentage of the full-load voltage:
$$
\%\text{Reg} = \frac{E_0 - V}{V}\times100
$$
where $E_0 = \sqrt{(V\cos\phi + IR_a)^2 + (V\sin\phi \pm IX_s)^2}$. The factors that affect it are:

#### 1. Armature resistance drop ($IR_a$)
The resistance of the armature winding causes a drop in phase with the current. It is small in large machines but increases with temperature.

#### 2. Leakage reactance drop ($IX_l$)
Part of the armature flux links only the armature conductors (slot, end-winding and tooth-tip leakage). It causes a reactive drop $IX_l$.

#### 3. Armature reaction ($IX_a$)
The armature mmf changes the main flux: cross-magnetising at unity pf, demagnetising at lagging pf, magnetising at leading pf. It is represented by $X_a$; usually it is the biggest factor. $X_s = X_l + X_a$.

#### 4. Power factor of the load
- Lagging pf: large positive regulation (voltage falls).
- Unity pf: small positive regulation.
- Leading pf: low or negative regulation (voltage rises).

#### 5. Magnitude of load current
All drops are proportional to the current; regulation rises with load.

#### 6. Saturation and field excitation
With saturation, the actual change in voltage is less than predicted by unsaturated $X_s$; this is why the EMF method gives pessimistic (higher) and the MMF method optimistic (lower) values, while ZPF (Potier) gives accurate values.

#### 7. Speed and frequency
A change in prime-mover speed changes $E = 4.44fk_w\Phi T$ and $X_s = 2\pi fL$; constant speed is assumed.

| Factor | Effect on regulation |
|---|---|
| Higher $R_a$ | Increases |
| Higher $X_l$ and $X_a$ ($X_s$) | Increases (lagging) |
| Lower lagging pf | Increases |
| Leading pf | Decreases / negative |
| Higher load | Increases |

## Check yourself

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. Voltage regulation of an alternator is expressed as a percentage of:
   A. No-load voltage
   B. Full-load terminal voltage
   C. Rated kVA
   D. Field voltage
Answer: B. Reg = (E0 - V)/V x 100, referred to the full-load terminal voltage. (Key point: Definition of regulation)

2. Which factor is usually the biggest contributor to regulation?
   A. Armature resistance drop
   B. Leakage reactance
   C. Armature reaction
   D. Frequency
Answer: C. Armature reaction, represented by Xa (with Xs = Xl + Xa), is usually the largest factor. (Key point: Biggest factor)

3. How does power factor affect regulation?
   A. Leading pf gives the highest positive regulation
   B. Lagging pf gives large positive regulation, leading pf low or negative
   C. Pf has no effect
   D. Unity pf gives the largest regulation
Answer: B. Lagging loads demagnetise and lower voltage; leading loads magnetise and may raise voltage, giving negative regulation. (Key point: Effect of power factor)

4. Which statement about methods for finding regulation is correct?
   A. EMF method is optimistic, MMF is pessimistic
   B. All methods give identical results
   C. EMF method is pessimistic, MMF optimistic, ZPF (Potier) accurate
   D. Potier method ignores saturation
Answer: C. The EMF method ignores saturation and overestimates regulation, MMF underestimates it, and Potier allows for saturation. (Key point: Method accuracy and saturation)
