## Question

What is all-pass filter? Where is it used since it passes all the frequency components?

## Short answer

An all-pass filter has constant magnitude but modifies phase and delay. It is used for delay equalization of sharp filters and channels to reduce inter-symbol interference; phase shifting (e.g., SSB modulators); time delay lines; building notch/band-pass filters; and Hilbert transformers.

## Answer

#### All-pass filter

An **all-pass filter** is a filter whose magnitude is constant ($|T(j\omega)| = K$) at all frequencies, while its phase changes with frequency. Its zeros are mirror images of its poles about the $j\omega$ axis.

$$
T_1(s) = \frac{s-a}{s+a}, \qquad T_2(s) = \frac{s^2 - \frac{\omega_0}{Q}s + \omega_0^2}{s^2 + \frac{\omega_0}{Q}s + \omega_0^2}
$$

For the first-order section, $|T_1(j\omega)| = 1$, the phase is $\theta = 180^\circ - 2\tan^{-1}(\omega/a)$ (falling from $180^\circ$ at DC to $0^\circ$ at high frequency), and the delay is $\tau = \dfrac{2a}{a^2+\omega^2}$. The sign-flipped form $\dfrac{a-s}{a+s}$ has $\theta = -2\tan^{-1}(\omega/a)$ (0° to −180°) and the same delay.

```text
      jw
      |
  x   |   o      x = pole, o = zero
 -a   |   +a     (mirror images)
 -----+-------> sigma
```

#### Where it is used

It does not change the magnitude, but it **changes the phase and delay**, and that is exactly why it is used:
- **Delay equalization:** sharp filters (Chebyshev, elliptic) and channels (telephone lines, cables) have non-flat group delay. An all-pass section in cascade adds delay where it is lacking so the total delay becomes flat, removing pulse distortion and inter-symbol interference in data links, video and audio.
- **Phase shifters / phase correction:** e.g. 90° phase-splitting networks in single-sideband (SSB) modulators, phase compensation in control and measurement systems.
- **Time delay circuits:** a cascade of all-pass sections approximates a pure delay $e^{-s\tau}$ for analog delay lines.
- **Building other filters:** a notch or band-pass can be made by adding the input to the all-pass output; used in phasers and audio effects.
- **Hilbert transformers** and phase-locked systems in communication.

**Practical first-order circuit:** an op-amp with two equal resistors $R_1$ (input and feedback) and an RC network on the non-inverting input gives $T(s) = -\dfrac{s - 1/RC}{s + 1/RC}$; changing $R$ shifts the phase from 0° to −180° without changing the gain.

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. What defines an all-pass filter?
   A. Constant magnitude at all frequencies with frequency-dependent phase
   B. Zero phase with varying magnitude
   C. Magnitude falls at high frequency
   D. Poles on the jw axis
   Answer: A. |T(jw)| = K while phase changes; zeros are mirror images of poles. (Key point: All-pass definition)

2. For T(s) = (s-a)/(s+a), the phase is...
   A. -tan^-1(w/a)
   B. -2 tan^-1(w/a), from 0 to -180 degrees
   C. +90 degrees constant
   D. tan^-1(a/w)
   Answer: B. Two equal phase contributions give -2 atan(w/a). (Key point: First-order phase)

3. Why is an all-pass used even though it passes all frequencies?
   A. To change phase/delay without changing magnitude, e.g. delay equalization
   B. To attenuate noise
   C. To increase gain
   D. To remove DC
   Answer: A. It corrects phase while leaving magnitude untouched. (Key point: Main use)

4. Which is another application of all-pass sections?
   A. Phase-splitting 90 degree networks in SSB modulators
   B. Power rectification
   C. Increasing amplifier gain
   D. Noise filtering by attenuation
   Answer: A. All-pass networks are used for phase shifters and Hilbert transformers. (Key point: Other uses)
