## Question

Explain bituminous stabilization of soil.

## Short answer

Bituminous stabilization mixes soil with bitumen, cutback or emulsion. In sand, bitumen coats particles for cohesion; in clay, it waterproofs clumps, preventing swelling and strength loss. The mix is compacted and cured, used for road bases.

## Answer

**Bituminous stabilization** is the improvement of soil by mixing it with bituminous material (bitumen, cutback or emulsion) so that it becomes waterproof and cohesive.

- **In cohesionless soils (sand, gravel):** the bitumen coats the particles and binds them together, giving cohesion and strength.
- **In cohesive soils (clay):** the bitumen waterproofs the soil clumps, so they do not absorb water and lose strength or swell.

Procedure: pulverise the soil, add the bitumen (about 4-7% for sand and 5-10% for fine-grained soils), mix thoroughly, spread, compact and allow volatile solvents to evaporate (curing).

Materials used: cutback bitumen, bitumen emulsion, tar.

Advantages: waterproofing, good durability, and suitable for road bases and subgrades. Limitation: not economical for deep or large works and is affected by high temperature.

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. How does bitumen stabilize sand or gravel?
   A. It removes fines
   B. It coats particles and binds them, giving cohesion
   C. It reduces plasticity by ion exchange
   D. It reacts pozzolanically
Answer: B. In cohesionless soils bitumen coats and binds particles. (Key point: Action in cohesionless soil)

2. How does bitumen help cohesive soils?
   A. It drains the clay
   B. It makes clay more plastic
   C. It waterproofs soil clumps so they do not absorb water, lose strength or swell
   D. It cements clay by hydration
Answer: C. Waterproofing prevents water absorption, strength loss and swelling. (Key point: Action in clay)

3. What happens at the end of the bituminous stabilization procedure?
   A. The mix is saturated with water
   B. Volatile solvents evaporate during curing after compaction
   C. Cement is added
   D. The soil is frozen
Answer: B. After mixing, spreading and compacting, the mix is cured while solvents evaporate. (Key point: Curing)
