## Question

Briefly explain the different (mechanical and chemical) methods of soil stabilization.

## Short answer

Mechanical methods include granular blending, compaction (rolling, dynamic, vibroflotation), and preloading. Chemical methods include cement, lime, bitumen stabilization, and grouting. Mechanical improves physical arrangement; chemical enhances bonding between particles.

## Answer

**Soil stabilization** is the process of improving the engineering properties of soil (strength, bearing capacity, permeability, volume stability) by mechanical or chemical means.

#### Mechanical methods

1. **Mechanical (granular) stabilization:** blending two or more soils of different gradation, such as coarse sand or gravel with clay, to get a well-graded mixture with higher density and strength.
2. **Compaction:** densifying the soil by rolling, tamping or vibration in layers at OMC. Rollers (smooth wheel, sheepsfoot, pneumatic) are used for surface layers.
3. **Deep compaction:** dynamic compaction, vibroflotation and compaction piles are used for deep loose sands.
4. **Preloading, drainage and reinforcement:** surcharge loading, sand drains, and geotextiles or geogrids.

#### Chemical methods

1. **Cement stabilization:** cement hydration binds particles. It is suitable for sandy soils.
2. **Lime stabilization:** lime reduces plasticity and swelling and gives pozzolanic strength gain. It is suitable for clays.
3. **Bituminous stabilization:** bitumen or cutback/emulsion waterproofs and binds the soil particles.
4. **Chemical admixtures:** calcium chloride, sodium silicate and fly ash are mixed for special effects.
5. **Grouting:** cement or chemical grout is injected into voids or fissures to bind and seal the soil.

Mechanical methods change the physical arrangement of particles, while chemical methods change the bonding between particles.

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. What is the basic difference between mechanical and chemical stabilization?
   A. Mechanical uses cement; chemical uses rollers
   B. Mechanical changes particle arrangement; chemical changes bonding between particles
   C. Mechanical changes bonding; chemical changes particle arrangement
   D. There is no difference
Answer: B. Mechanical methods rearrange particles physically; chemical methods alter the bonding between them. (Key point: Mechanical versus chemical)

2. What is mechanical (granular) stabilization?
   A. Freezing the ground
   B. Injecting grout
   C. Blending soils of different gradation to get a well-graded, denser, stronger mix
   D. Adding lime to clay
Answer: C. Blending coarse and fine soils gives a well-graded mixture with higher density and strength. (Key point: Granular stabilization)

3. Which pairing of chemical stabilizer and soil is correct?
   A. Lime with sands, cement with clays
   B. Cement with sandy soils, lime with clays
   C. Bitumen only with rock
   D. Calcium chloride with gravel for strength gain by pozzolana
Answer: B. Cement suits sandy soils; lime reduces plasticity and swelling of clays. (Key point: Matching chemical method to soil)
