## Question

Discuss the advantages of digital signal transmission over analog signal transmission.

## Short answer

Digital transmission offers superior noise immunity because the receiver only decides between two levels, and repeaters regenerate clean pulses so noise does not accumulate. It also supports error detection/correction, easy multiplexing, encryption, and direct processing by digital hardware.

## Answer

Digital transmission sends information as discrete (binary) levels, while analog transmission sends a continuously varying signal. Digital has these advantages:

1. **Noise immunity:** the receiver only decides between two levels (0 or 1), so small noise does not change the data. Analog noise adds directly to the signal and cannot be removed.
2. **Regeneration:** a repeater can rebuild a clean pulse, so noise does not accumulate over long distances. Analog amplifiers amplify noise along with the signal.
3. **Error detection and correction:** parity, CRC and error-correcting codes can detect and fix errors.
4. **Multiplexing:** many channels share one link easily by TDM, and different data types (voice, data, video) are carried in the same format.
5. **Security:** data can be encrypted and compressed easily.
6. **Processing and storage:** the data is already in a form that computers and microprocessors can store and process, and digital hardware is cheap and compact (ICs).
7. **Better quality:** signal quality does not degrade with distance as long as the bit error rate is low.

The main cost is larger bandwidth for the same information and the need for A/D and D/A conversion, but the advantages above usually outweigh this.

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. Why is digital less affected by noise?
   A. It uses a lower frequency
   B. Noise is subtracted by the carrier
   C. The receiver only decides between two levels
   D. It uses larger amplitude
Answer: C. Small noise does not change the decision between 0 and 1. (Key point: Noise immunity)

2. What does a repeater do in a digital link?
   A. Amplifies the noise too
   B. Adds more noise
   C. Converts it to analog
   D. Rebuilds a clean pulse so noise does not accumulate
Answer: D. Analog amplifiers amplify noise along with the signal. (Key point: Regeneration)

3. Which tools detect and fix errors in digital data?
   A. Parity, CRC and error-correcting codes
   B. Anti-aliasing filters
   C. Mixers
   D. Pre-emphasis
Answer: A. Digital data permits coding for error control. (Key point: Error control)

4. What is the main cost of digital transmission?
   A. Poor quality over distance
   B. Larger bandwidth and A/D, D/A conversion
   C. No multiplexing
   D. No encryption
Answer: B. Advantages usually outweigh this cost. (Key point: Cost)
