## Question

What is a ground loop? How can we eliminate them?

## Short answer

A ground loop is a closed conductive path formed when multiple ground points have different potentials, injecting noise voltage in series with the signal. Eliminate it by single-point grounding, using isolation (transformers, optocouplers), differential signaling, grounding shields at one end, and reducing loop area.

## Answer

**Ground loop:** a closed loop formed when two or more points of a system that should be at the same potential are connected to ground by multiple paths. Because the ground conductors have impedance, the ground currents (and magnetic fields cutting the loop) create a voltage difference between the grounds. This voltage appears in series with the signal and causes hum and noise.

```text
 Equip A --signal--> Equip B
   |                   |
  GND_A ------------ GND_B   <- loop; Vnoise between grounds
```

#### Elimination
- **Single-point grounding:** connect each circuit to ground at only one point.
- **Isolation:** use isolation transformers or opto-couplers to break the conductive path, or differential amplifiers to reject the ground-voltage difference.
- **Reduce loop area / twisted pair**, and use balanced differential lines.
- **Ground the cable shield at one end** only (at low frequency).
- Use common-mode chokes or a ground-lift (for the signal, not for safety earth).
- Keep all equipment on the same power outlet or distribution branch.

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. What is a ground loop?
   A. A circuit grounded at exactly one point
   B. A closed loop where points meant to be at equal potential are grounded by multiple paths
   C. A loop of wire with no ground
   D. A coil used as a magnetic shield
   Answer: B. Multiple ground paths form a loop in which ground impedance gives a voltage difference. (Key point: Definition)

2. How does a ground loop produce noise?
   A. The voltage difference between grounds appears in series with the signal, causing hum
   B. It increases the signal amplitude cleanly
   C. It shorts the supply
   D. It reduces common impedance
   Answer: A. Ground currents and magnetic fields create a voltage that adds to the signal. (Key point: Effect)

3. Which method helps eliminate ground loops?
   A. Adding more ground connections
   B. Grounding shield at both ends at low frequency
   C. Using larger loop areas
   D. Single-point grounding or isolation using transformers/opto-couplers
   Answer: D. Breaking the conductive loop path removes the ground-potential difference from the signal. (Key point: Elimination)
