## Question

Discuss the general process of creating a PCB with appropriate figures.

## Short answer

The PCB creation process starts with schematic capture and netlist generation, followed by component placement, routing, and design-rule check. Output Gerber and drill files are used for fabrication (etching, drilling, plating), then assembly and testing.

## Answer

A printed circuit board (PCB) is a board of insulating material (FR4 epoxy glass) with copper conductor traces connecting components. The general process is:

```text
 Schematic -> Netlist -> Placement -> Routing
    -> Design-rule check -> Gerber/drill files
    -> Fabrication -> Assembly -> Testing
```

1. **Circuit design and schematic capture** in EDA software (e.g. Proteus, Altium, KiCad); simulation to verify.
2. **Component footprint assignment** and netlist generation.
3. **Board outline and stack-up decision** (single, double or multi-layer).
4. **Component placement** with the rules for grouping, heat and connectors.
5. **Routing** of the traces (manual/auto) following width, spacing and noise rules; then ground/power planes.
6. **Design-rule and electrical-rule checks (DRC/ERC)** and review.
7. **Output files:** Gerber (copper, mask, silk layers), drill file, and bill of materials.
8. **Fabrication:** the copper-clad laminate is coated with photoresist, exposed through the artwork film, developed, etched to remove unwanted copper, drilled, plated, solder-masked and silk-screened.
9. **Assembly:** components are mounted (through-hole or SMD) and soldered (wave or reflow).
10. **Testing and inspection:** continuity, in-circuit and functional tests.

## Check yourself

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. What is the correct order of the early design stages?
   A. Routing, schematic, placement
   B. Schematic, netlist, placement, routing
   C. Gerber, schematic, routing
   D. Placement, schematic, netlist
   Answer: B. Schematic capture leads to netlist, then placement and routing. (Key point: Order of design flow)

2. What files are sent to the fabricator after DRC?
   A. Gerber files, drill file and bill of materials
   B. Source code only
   C. Simulation waveforms
   D. Datasheets
   Answer: A. Gerber (copper, mask, silk), drill and BOM define the board. (Key point: Output files)

3. In fabrication, what happens after photoresist is exposed and developed?
   A. Components are soldered
   B. Unwanted copper is etched away
   C. Gerber is generated
   D. Footprints are assigned
   Answer: B. Etching removes unprotected copper, followed by drilling, plating, solder-mask and silkscreen. (Key point: Fabrication steps)
